Role Purpose & Core Responsibilities
The Mission/Purpose
Finance Controller
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting Leadership
- Own all accounting functions: AR, AP, GL, billing, invoicing, and revenue recognition across D2C and retail channels.
- Ensure accurate and timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes; prepare financial statements within 10 days.
- Lead balance sheet reconciliations with 100% accuracy; maintain inventory accounting and stockyard management with SKU-level tracking.
- Oversee inter-company transactions and maintain financial discipline supporting rapid scale.
Financial Planning, Analysis, Cash Flow Management & MIS Reporting
- Conduct unit economics analysis by channel to identify profitability and cash-burn.
- Design and implement budgeting, forecasting, and rolling 13-month cash flow models considering seasonality and expenses.
- Provide the leadership team with clear, actionable MIS reports and financial dashboards covering gross margin, CAC, retention, burn rate, and unit economics.
- Lead scenario planning for new markets and products, and negotiate supplier payment terms to optimize working capital.
Tax Compliance & Regulatory Reporting
- Ensure 100% compliance with GST filing (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-4), income tax, TDS/TCS, and audit coordination.
- Maintain documentation for GST and regulatory filings; stay ahead of regulatory changes.
- Manage Companies Act filings and Registrar of Companies compliance professionally.
Cost Management & Operational Efficiency
- Analyze P&L by product line and channel to identify margin improvement opportunities.
- Implement internal controls and approval workflows for procurement and expense management.
- Monitor and optimize operational KPIs: inventory turnover, DPO, DSO, cash conversion cycle.
- Drive cost optimization initiatives across supply chain, logistics, and manufacturing.
Investor Readiness & Financial Strategy
- Prepare investor-ready financial data packages and lead due diligence.
- Model growth scenarios to support strategic decisions.
- Ensure consistency between financial operations and investor communications.
Finance Team Leadership & Development
- Build and mentor a high-performance finance team fostering ownership and accountability.
- Implement/upgrade accounting software and ERP systems for automation and accuracy.
- Develop SOPs, checklists, and training for scalable, efficient finance processes.
Required Skills & Competencies
Financial & Accounting Expertise
- 5–8 years’ progressive experience in financial accounting and controllership
- Chartered Accountant (CA) preferred; strong equivalent experience considered
- Deep knowledge of GST compliance, income tax, and statutory audits in India
- Hands-on with accounting software (Tally, SAP, NetSuite, QuickBooks, or cloud ERP)
- Solid understanding of revenue recognition, inventory valuation, and inter-company accounting
D2C / FMCG / High-Growth Startup Experience
- 3+ years managing financial operations in D2C, FMCG, or fast-growth startups
- Proven track record managing finance for businesses scaling from ₹5 to ₹100 crore
- Expertise in omnichannel financial management (online, retail, wholesale, quick commerce)
- Deep understanding of D2C economics: CAC, LTV, repeat purchase rates, inventory and cash flow volatility
Financial Analysis & Planning
- Proficient in building financial models, forecasts, and scenario analysis (Excel)
- Experienced in unit economics, contribution margin analysis, and profitability tracking
- Skilled at generating actionable insights and communicating them to non-finance stakeholders
- Comfortable with real-time financial dashboarding tools (Tableau, Power BI, Looker)
Technical & Process Skills
- Advanced Excel: data analysis, pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data visualization
- Basic SQL or ability to manipulate data from databases
- Experience designing and implementing SOPs and internal controls
- Familiar with QuickBooks, Tally Prime, SAP, or other ERP systems
