At Smith+Nephew, we design and manufacture technology that takes the limits off living.The Master Data Manager, Customer & Vendor, is responsible for the GBS Master Data Team service catalogue, placement, and efficiency to ensure long-term data health and business value capture. The incumbent supports the Global Master Data Governance model, including the data quality strategy, and assists in the definition and delivery of key aspects of the Master Data roadmap to ensure that the people, processes, and technology are in place for data to be recognized as an asset. The MDM Manager oversees a team of data custodians who manage, maintain, and monitor MDM policies and quality standards, and provides targeted support for issues and data maintenance across all franchises, source systems (SAP, Axapta, etc.), and regions.

What will you be doing?

Process, Technology & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure the GBS MDM Team provides a high level of service in the region. The principal data elements include Vendor Master, Customer Master, and associated records.
  • Implement data quality and data management changes that span multiple data domains (customer, vendor, employee, finance).
  • Support the MDM technology roadmap and ensure alignment of MDM workflow tools globally.
  • Lead the implementation of large-scale Global MDM initiatives.
  • Coordinate and report on the transition of new services into the team.
  • Coordinate the design, development, and delivery of MDM metrics, dashboards, scorecards, and analyses.
  • Recommend best practices and innovative ideas to improve the operating model, project execution, and collaboration with stakeholders.
  • Foster a continuous improvement mindset within the team.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Manage and develop the Data Stewards network in the region and globally to ensure alignment, data consistency, and application of global policies, standards, and data quality controls.
  • Enable the business to self-serve in the market while operating with a multifaceted perspective and strong communication across a culturally diverse workforce.
  • Direct the resolution of complex or unusual business problems by applying analytical thought and sound judgment.
  • Provide appropriate training and education on data management across regional countries.
  • Prioritize activities, allocate resources effectively, and inspire, motivate, and develop employees to ensure timely execution and delivery.
  • Set the tone and lead the team with the appropriate ethos, mindset, and approach to customer service.
  • Set objectives, conduct mid- and year-end reviews, and ensure proactive resource planning to meet agreed service levels.
  • Support and promote the development of the team, striving for a high-performing, successful, and engaged workforce.

Governance & Compliance

  • Actively participate in MDM Governance meetings and ensure accountability for the integrity of global master data within the GBS scope.
  • Monitor processes, policies, and procedures for all critical data elements across the region to deliver the necessary data quality to support business decision-making.
  • Drive alignment of vendor and customer data processes across the globe.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant policies, MAPS controls, and timely delivery of agreed KPIs.
  • Ensure all procedural documentation is kept up to date.
  • Coordinate Service Level Agreements with business functions related to the creation, modification, and deletion of centrally managed master data objects.

Stakeholder Management

  • Actively engage with business partners and senior stakeholders to improve service levels and identify opportunities for expanding service coverage.
  • Define and update the department roadmap and budget, ensuring alignment with senior management and subsequent implementation.
  • Operate with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with employees from all areas of the business across a culturally diverse workforce.

What will you need to be successful?

  • Education: Preferably should have completed Master’s degree in the related field.
  • Licenses/ Certifications: Program Management Tools and Methodologies
  • Minimum 5–6 years of experience in master data management, recognized as a senior subject matter expert for data management within the region.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory/ team managerial experience, with proven ability to lead and develop teams.
  • Extensive knowledge of Vendor and Customer Master Data processes, with strong SAP experience.
  • Hands-on experience with Master Data workflow tools such as Syndigo, Winshuttle, e-Flow, Appian, and Ariba.
  • Familiarity with Master Data Governance tools (e.g., Alation) and data harmonization processes.
  • Data Governance: Deep understanding of data governance principles, data quality management, and industry best practices.
  • Transformation: Experience driving digital transformation and master data initiatives.
  • Prior experience working within a Global Business Services (GBS) structure is highly advantageous.

  • Analytical & Strategic Thinking: Strong analytical skills with the ability to resolve complex business problems, influence stakeholders, and align strategies across functions and regions.
  • Stakeholder Management: Proven expertise in building and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders across functions such as Finance, Supply Chain, Procurement, and others, at all organizational levels.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, with an exceptional command of the English language.
  • Project Management: Demonstrated proficiency in planning, executing, and delivering projects successfully.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, particularly advanced capabilities in Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing circumstances, make quick and sound decisions, and balance multiple priorities simultaneously.
