Position Summary:

The Director of Technology provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all district technology systems, infrastructure, and services. This role ensures that technology supports teaching, learning, and district operations while prioritizing security, reliability, fiscal responsibility, and student-centered decision making. The Director of Technology serves as the district’s primary technology advisor and leads the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of district-wide technology initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferred) or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
  • Michigan School Board Officials (MSBO) Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Certificate, or ability to obtain within two (2) years of employment
  • Demonstrated expertise managing large databases and student information systems (e.g., SIS, Single Record Student Database)
  • Strong knowledge of network infrastructure, including wired and wireless IP networks
  • Experience with data backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity systems
  • Experience installing, configuring, and troubleshooting hardware and software in an educational environment
  • Working knowledge of network operating systems and platforms (e.g., Windows, ChromeOS, iOS/iPadOS)
  • Experience with network security appliances, firewalls, and cybersecurity best practices
  • Experience with cloud platforms including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office 365
  • Strong documentation, organizational, and project management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a leadership team
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and multitasking skills
  • Ability to build and maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Governance

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a district-wide technology strategic plan aligned with instructional and operational goals
  • Serve as the primary technology advisor to the Superintendent and Board of Education
  • Provide regular updates to district leadership on technology initiatives, risks, and long-range planning
  • Establish, implement, and enforce district technology standards, policies, and governance structures

Technology Operations & Systems Management

  • Design, install, manage, and maintain district network systems and infrastructure
  • Oversee installation, repair, and maintenance of computers, devices, peripherals, audiovisual systems, and related technology
  • Serve as system administrator for district internet connectivity, email systems, and VoIP services
  • Ensure secure intranet and network environments
  • Maintain accurate system, network, and asset documentation
  • Supervise system-wide inventory of technology assets
  • Oversee district websites and digital platforms
  • Manage auditorium technology systems and supervise the Auditorium Manager

Cybersecurity, Data Privacy & Risk Management

  • Lead the district’s cybersecurity program, including incident response and recovery planning
  • Ensure compliance with FERPA, COPPA, and Michigan student data privacy laws
  • Conduct regular risk assessments, vulnerability reviews, and security audits
  • Coordinate cybersecurity awareness and training for staff
  • Serve as district liaison for cyber insurance providers and security vendors

Budget, Finance & Capital Planning

  • Develop and manage the annual technology budget
  • Forecast multi-year technology lifecycle, replacement, and sustainability costs
  • Participate in bond, sinking fund, and capital project planning
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities, grants, and cooperative purchasing programs
  • Oversee acquisition, deployment, and disposal of technology hardware and software

Instructional Technology Leadership

  • Collaborate with curriculum and instructional leaders on instructional technology selection and implementation
  • Align digital tools with teaching, learning, and assessment goals
  • Lead and support district-wide technology professional development
  • Evaluate instructional technology effectiveness and return on investment
  • Research emerging technologies and assess potential district applications

Department & Staff Leadership

  • Supervise, evaluate, and support all technology department personnel
  • Lead hiring, onboarding, and professional growth of technology staff
  • Establish department goals, performance metrics, and service expectations
  • Oversee the district technology help-desk operations

Vendor, Contract & Partnership Management

  • Serve as primary contact for technology vendors and service providers
  • Negotiate contracts, manage renewals, and ensure compliance with service-level agreements
  • Coordinate participation in ISD, REMC, and statewide purchasing programs
  • Attend county and regional technology meetings and share relevant information with district leadership

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with district and building-level technology planning and evaluation
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent
