Job Purpose

The Business Development Manager will be responsible for driving business growth in irrigation and water supply projects by identifying opportunities, developing relationships with key stakeholders, and promoting automation solutions that improve efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. The role involves market analysis, customer engagement, project acquisition, and partnership development in developing markets.

Key Responsibilities

Business Development & Sales

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities in irrigation and water supply projects with a focus on automation, SCADA, remote monitoring, and control solutions.
  • Develop and execute market entry strategies in developing countries and emerging regions.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with EPCs, government agencies, consultants, contractors, NGOs, and funding agencies.
  • Prepare and deliver technical and commercial proposals, presentations, and tender submissions.
  • Drive end-to-end sales cycles from lead generation to contract closure.

Market & Strategy

  • Conduct market research to identify trends, competitor activities, and project pipelines in the water sector.
  • Analyse customer needs and align automation solutions with project requirements.
  • Develop partnerships with local integrators, distributors, and technology providers to expand market reach.
  • Contribute to annual business planning, forecasting, and target setting.

Project Support

  • Collaborate with engineering and project teams to ensure proposed solutions meet technical, commercial, and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide customer support during the bidding, negotiation, and execution phases.
  • Monitor project progress and maintain strong post-sales relationships to enable repeat business.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with government departments, donor-funded agencies (World Bank, ADB, etc.), and NGOs working in water resource development.
  • Represent the company in industry exhibitions, trade fairs, and technical conferences.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of irrigation and drinking water projects, especially in developing markets.
  • Knowledge of automation solutions (PLC, SCADA, remote telemetry, IoT-based monitoring, pumping automation, flow/pressure management & type of Valves).
  • Excellent business development, networking, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to interact with senior stakeholders and decision-makers in government and private sectors.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and presentation skills.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across target regions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical, or Civil). Masters in business administration (MBA) preferred.
  • 7–12 years of experience in business development or sales in water, irrigation, infrastructure, or automation projects.
  • Proven track record of securing medium-to-large irrigation or water supply projects.
  • Exposure to international development agencies, donor-funded projects, or EPCs is highly desirable.

Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • Achievement of annual sales and revenue targets.
  • Number of new accounts/projects acquired in irrigation and drinking water sectors.
  • Strength of strategic partnerships and network in target markets.
  • Market share growth and penetration in developing regions.
  • Customer satisfaction and repeat business.
