The Steel Melting Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all operations within the SMS, ensuring efficient, safe, and cost-effective steel production that meets quality and quantity targets. This role involves managing manpower, equipment, production planning, and maintenance while ensuring strict adherence to safety, environmental, and quality standards. The manager also plays a key role in driving continuous improvement, optimizing processes, and implementing best practices to maximize plant productivity and profitability.

Sub Section Head - AOD - SMS - Process - Steel Production ManagementPlan, monitor, and control daily melting operations to meet production targets. Ensure optimal use of furnaces (EAF/IF., ladle refining, and casting operations. Minimize production downtime and enhance throughput. Quality AssuranceEnsure adherence to steel grade chemistry and mechanical property specifications. Collaborate with the quality department for metallurgical control and defect analysis. Implement quality improvement initiatives to reduce rework and rejection. Operational EfficiencyMonitor process parameters and ensure energy-efficient operation. Drive process optimization and cost reduction through lean practices. Implement KPIs (yield, power consumption, tap-to-tap time, etc... Maintenance & Asset ManagementCoordinate with maintenance teams to ensure high equipment availability. Ensure preventive and predictive maintenance schedules are followed. Participate in root cause analysis of breakdowns and implement corrective actions. Team ManagementLead and manage shift engineers, supervisors, and shop floor workforce. Ensure effective training and development of team members. Foster a culture of accountability, discipline, and performance. Safety & ComplianceEnforce safety protocols and ensure zero-incident operations. Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and statutory regulations. Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and emergency preparedness drills. Reporting & CoordinationPrepare and present daily/weekly/monthly production reports to management. Coordinate with raw material procurement, logistics, and other departments for smooth operations. Participate in strategic planning for capacity expansion and modernization.

Principal Accountabilities

Production ManagementPlan, schedule, and execute daily steel melting operations to meet production targets. Optimize furnace operations (EAF/IF. and continuous casting processes (CCM.. Ensure timely heat tapping, ladle handling, and casting with minimal delays. Process ControlMonitor and control key process parameters (temperature, chemistry, slag formation, etc... Ensure proper charge mix and alloy additions to meet desired steel grades. Drive improvements in yield, energy consumption, and furnace turnaround time. Quality AssuranceMaintain strict control over steel quality and chemical composition. Coordinate with the quality team for heat analysis and defect prevention. Implement corrective actions for any deviations or quality issues. Equipment & Maintenance CoordinationEnsure proper functioning of melting and casting equipment. Coordinate with the maintenance department for breakdowns and preventive maintenance. Minimize unplanned downtime through proactive equipment monitoring. Manpower & Shift ManagementSupervise and guide engineers, supervisors, and operators across all shifts. Ensure proper shift handovers and communication of production priorities. Conduct training sessions to upgrade workforce skills and ensure compliance. Safety & ComplianceEnforce all safety measures and personal protective equipment (PPE. usage. Conduct regular safety audits, toolbox talks, and emergency drills. Ensure compliance with statutory regulations (pollution control, fire safety, etc... Cost & Resource OptimizationMonitor and control consumption of power, ferroalloys, and refractories. Identify opportunities to reduce cost per ton through operational efficiency. Implement lean and 5S practices in the shop. Documentation & ReportingMaintain detailed records of heat logs, shift reports, and production data. Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly performance reports for senior management. Analyze production trends and recommend improvement actions. Coordination with Other DepartmentsLiaise with raw material, quality, casting, maintenance, and logistics teams. Ensure smooth flow of materials and timely dispatch of billets/ingots. Support plant-wide initiatives and shutdown planning. Continuous ImprovementDrive kaizen, TPM, and Six Sigma initiatives within the SMS. Evaluate new technologies and upgrades for productivity enhancement. Benchmark best practices from other plants or industry standards.
