Job Description (JD): Biomedical Engineer – Hospital
Title: Biomedical Engineer
Department: Engineering / Maintenance / Clinical Support Services
Reporting To: Hospital Administrator / Medical Superintendent
Job Purpose:
The Biomedical Engineer is responsible for end-to-end management of all medical equipment in the hospital, ensuring their safety, functionality, compliance, maintenance, calibration, and optimal utilization to support uninterrupted patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Equipment Management (Complete Lifecycle)Installation, commissioning, and validation of all biomedical equipment.
Preventive maintenance (PM) and breakdown maintenance of:
ICU, OT, Cath lab, Dialysis, OPD, Wards, Emergency equipment.
Maintain equipment inventory, tagging, and asset records.
Ensure proper operation manuals and user guidelines are available.
2. Preventive Maintenance & CalibrationPrepare and implement Preventive Maintenance Schedule (PMS).
Coordinate calibration of critical equipment:
Monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, defibrillators, dialysis machines, etc.
Maintain calibration certificates and records as per NABH norms.
Ensure zero overdue PMs for critical equipment.
3. Breakdown & Emergency Handling Attend and resolve equipment breakdowns promptly.
Coordinate with vendors for major repairs and AMC-related issues.
Ensure minimal downtime, especially for life-saving equipment.
Maintain breakdown logs and root cause analysis (RCA).
4. Vendor & AMC ManagementCoordinate with equipment vendors, service engineers, and suppliers.
Manage AMC/CMC contracts:
Renewal tracking
Service follow-ups
Performance monitoring
Assist in negotiation and evaluation of service contracts.
5. Purchase & Installation Support Assist management in technical evaluation before purchasing new equipment.
Support procurement team with specifications and comparisons.
Supervise installation, testing, and user training after procurement.
6. User Training & SupportTrain doctors, nurses, and technicians on:
Safe usage of equipment
Basic troubleshooting
Conduct refresher training sessions when required.
Ensure misuse-related incidents are minimized.
7. Safety & Compliance Ensure electrical and equipment safety standards are followed.
Report and investigate equipment-related incidents.
Participate in patient safety initiatives.
Ensure compliance with:
NABH standards
Biomedical equipment safety norms
Hospital policies
8. NABH & Documentation Maintain all NABH-required documents:
Equipment inventory
Maintenance records
Calibration records
Breakdown logs
Support internal and external NABH audits.
Coordinate corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) related to equipment.
9. Coordination & Communication Coordinate with:
Nursing staff
Doctors
Housekeeping
Administration
Act as a bridge between clinical and technical teams.
Provide regular reports to management on equipment status.
Additional Responsibilities (When Required):Support infection control team in equipment disinfection protocols.
Assist in planning new units (ICU expansion, OT setup, Dialysis setup).
Emergency duty support during hospital disasters or code situations.
Qualification: Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering or related field.
Experience: 06–2 years of experience in a hospital setting (preferred).
