Job Summary
As Engineering Manager, you will lead and manage a team of backend and/or frontend engineers, ensuring successful delivery of high-quality features while fostering a productive, collaborative, and growth-oriented team culture. You will balance technical leadership with people management, working closely with product managers, technical architects, and cross-functional teams to execute the product roadmap and drive engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership and Management:
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of 5–10 software engineers (backend, frontend, or full-stack), providing guidance, support, and career development
- Conduct regular 1-on-1 meetings with team members to discuss performance, goals, challenges, and career aspirations
- Set clear goals and expectations, provide constructive feedback, and conduct performance reviews
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture that encourages innovation, learning, and accountability
- Identify skill gaps and development opportunities, and facilitate training, mentoring, and knowledge sharing
- Recruit, interview, and hire top engineering talent to scale the team
- Handle team conflicts, performance issues, and escalations with fairness and transparency
Technical Delivery and Execution:
- Own the end-to-end delivery of features and projects, ensuring timely, high-quality releases
- Collaborate with product managers to understand requirements, define scope, and plan sprints
- Break down complex features into manageable tasks, estimate effort, and allocate work effectively
- Lead sprint planning, daily standups, retrospectives, and backlog grooming sessions
- Monitor progress, identify blockers, and take proactive action to keep projects on track
- Ensure adherence to coding standards, best practices, and quality guidelines through code reviews and technical oversight
- Manage technical debt and balance feature delivery with platform improvements and refactoring
- Coordinate with QA teams to define testing strategies and ensure comprehensive test coverage
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Partner closely with product managers to align engineering efforts with product strategy and customer needs
- Collaborate with technical architects to ensure architectural consistency and scalability
- Work with DevOps and infrastructure teams to ensure reliable deployments, monitoring, and incident response
- Engage with customer success and support teams to understand customer issues and prioritize bug fixes
- Communicate progress, risks, and dependencies to stakeholders and leadership
Process and Culture:
- Establish and refine engineering processes, workflows, and best practices to improve team efficiency and quality
- Drive adoption of agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and continuous improvement practices
- Implement metrics and KPIs to measure team performance, velocity, code quality, and delivery predictability
- Promote a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous learning within the team
- Encourage experimentation, innovation, and knowledge sharing through tech talks, hackathons, and learning sessions
Technical Contribution:
- Maintain technical credibility by staying hands-on with code reviews, technical discussions, and occasional coding
- Provide technical guidance on complex problems, architectural decisions, and design trade-offs
- Stay updated on technology trends, tools, and best practices relevant to the platform
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field
- 6+ years’ experience in engineering management or technical leadership; 6–8 years of software engineering experience overall
- Strong technical background in backend development (Python, Django, FastAPI) and/or frontend development (React, JavaScript)
- Proven experience managing and leading engineering teams, including hiring, mentoring, and performance management
- Deep understanding of agile methodologies, sprint planning, and software development lifecycle
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with ability to inspire and motivate teams
- Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver on time
- Experience with modern development tools and practices including Git, CI/CD, code reviews, and testing frameworks
- Problem-solving mindset with ability to navigate ambiguity and make decisions under pressure
- Customer-focused approach with commitment to delivering value and quality
- Experience in SaaS, B2B products, or product development environments is highly desirable
- Understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS), databases (PostgreSQL), and integration patterns is a plus
- Familiarity with accounting software, fintech, or compliance products is beneficial
