Job Title Section Head – Design Electrical Reports To Head Design & Engineering Division Design & Engineering Department Design & EngineeringSection Design & Engineering Location SDHI Pipavav Position Grade DGM/AGMDirect Reports Sr. Engineer Electrical, Draughtsman 2 - Job Summary and PurposeThe Section Head – Design Electrical is responsible for overseeing the design, development, and integration of electrical, electronic, and instrumentation systems for shipbuilding projects. This role ensures that all electrical systems meet technical specifications, industry standards, and regulatory requirements, covering essential systems like power distribution, navigation, communication, and automation. The Section Head collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, efficient, and compliant systems that are optimized for shipyard and operational needs, while also supporting production processes and addressing any engineering challenges.The purpose of the Section Head – Design Electrical role is to lead and manage the electrical, electronics, and instrumentation design activities, ensuring alignment with project specifications, safety standards, and regulatory compliance. This role is essential for developing integrated, high-quality electrical systems that meet the functional, safety, and performance needs of shipbuilding projects. The Section Head will engage with internal and external stakeholders to address technical requirements, ensure quality control, and support the shipyard’s goal of delivering durable, high-performing vessels.Swan group is a 115+ year old engineering & project-oriented conglomerate with businesses across textile, real estate, oil & gas, petroleum products, shipyard and heavy engineering. We have a vision for redeveloping the asset as "National Champion Shipyard" 3 – Accountabilities• Develop and oversee the design of main power generation, distribution systems, and emergency power systems tailored to shipbuilding specifications, ensuring energy efficiency and redundancy.• Manage the integration of power sources, including primary, backup, and alternative energy solutions (e.g., battery systems), to meet the vessel's operational requirements.• Lead the design and engineering of critical navigational systems (e.g., radar, GPS) and communication networks (e.g., VHF, UHF, intercom systems) for effective vessel operations.• Design and specify ship automation and control systems, including alarm and monitoring systems, ensuring interoperability with other shipboard systems.• Plan detailed cabling layouts, conduit pathways, and connections for safe, efficient electrical distribution across vessel sections, aligning with hull design and structural constraints.• Ensure cabling systems are organized and routed to minimize interference, reduce installation time, and comply with marine safety standards.• Oversee the design and integration of instrumentation systems for monitoring key vessel functions, including engine status, fuel usage, and environmental parameters.• Select and calibrate sensors, gauges, and electronic components to ensure accurate, real-time data collection for optimal operational performance.• Ensure all electrical designs meet maritime safety regulations and standards set by regulatory bodies (e.g., IMO, SOLAS) and classification societies (e.g., ABS, DNV).• Prepare detailed design documents for regulatory reviews, addressing compliance feedback to secure approvals for each project stage.• Work closely with structural, mechanical, and hull design teams to coordinate electrical layouts that are compatible with overall vessel structure, including areas with high vibration, temperature variation, or confined space.• Provide technical guidance during the production phase, including on-site inspections to validate the implementation of electrical designs and troubleshoot issues in real time.• Coordinate testing of electrical and electronic systems during the commissioning phase to verify performance and address any last-minute adjustments.• Lead a team of electrical engineers and designers, providing mentorship and technical oversight to maintain high-quality design standards.• Encourage ongoing professional development within the team to keep up with evolving technologies and regulatory requirements in maritime electrical design.• Interface with clients and stakeholders to clarify technical specifications, gather design requirements, and provide progress updates.• Translate client needs into actionable design plans, ensuring that electrical systems align with operational expectations and vessel use cases.• Strong understanding of electrical principles, circuit design, and system integration. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills in Development of electrical system designs, including schematics, circuit layouts, and wiring diagrams, ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards.• Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.• Preparation of Basic Design and Functional Design Drawings. These drawings are to meet Build specifications and Class Rule requirements. Preparation of Bill of Materials• Preparation of 3D model Production Drawings. These drawings are to be based on Class and Owner approved Basic and Functional drawings.• Prepare cable length table to stop cable wastages. Control and Monitor issue of production drawings• Checking skills of quality & correctness of EPLA, SLD & Cable termination diagrams of all electrical systems in the the ship modification jobs, retrofits, conversions and Marine Equipment & component (MEC). Design of Electrical systems in accordance with Class Rules and applicable International/National technical standards for Ships in Services and MEC structures.• Assess project requirements during FEED stage and prepare the BoM/MTO to help the commercial team for bidding the new projects. 4 – Interactions and Working Relationships Internal:• Project Kick-off Meetings with Project Management• Design Integration Sessions with Structural, Mechanical, and Piping Teams• Design Review and Quality Assurance Meetings with QA/QC Teams• Production and Implementation Planning Workshops with Production and Fabrication Teams• Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Compliance Workshops with HSE Teams• Innovation and Process Improvement Sessions with R&D TeamExternal:• Technical Design Reviews with Classification Societies (e.g., ABS, DNV)• Requirements Gathering and Project Progress Meetings with Clients/Shipowners• Supplier and Vendor Coordination Meetings with Equipment Manufacturers• Regulatory Compliance Workshops with Maritime Regulatory Bodies (e.g., IMO, SOLAS)• System Testing and Validation Workshops with External Testing Agencies• Client Acceptance and Training Workshops for End Users• Technical Advisory Sessions with Industry Experts or Consultants 5 – Financial Authorities• As per DOA policy6 – Qualifications, Experience and SkillsPreferred Qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field.• Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or specialized maritime studies is preferred for advanced technical and industry expertise.• Professional certifications in marine electrical engineering or related fields (e.g., Chartered Engineer status) are advantageous.• Certifications in project management (e.g., PMP) or process improvement (e.g., Lean Six Sigma) are advantageous.Preferred Experience: • 15+ years of experience in electrical, electronics, and instrumentation design within shipbuilding or marine engineering environments.• At least 5 years in a leadership role managing design projects, overseeing design teams, and handling cross-functional collaborations in a shipyard or similar setting.• Atleast 5 years of experience in the design department (experience in design department in later years preferred). During the tenure in design department candidate should have experience of:o Preparation of PTS for equipment and materialo Preparing technical specifications for work for offloading and turnkey subcontractingo Working on industry prevalent and acceptable design software (e.g TRIBON) oFunctional Competency: • Detailed design knowledge in Electrical Power and Load Analysis, cable sizing and short circuit calculations.• Knowledge of electrical distribution and protection.• Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies• In-depth understanding of industry regulations and standards, including those from IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL, and classification societies (e.g., ABS, DNV).• Ability to ensure designs are compliant with all relevant safety, environmental, and operational regulations.• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including production, procurement, and QA/QC.• Ability to conceptualize and draw design details independently
