The Portfolio Manager will work with the India Leadership team to help provide technical, strategic, and staff leadership across the India program. This position will report directly to the Managing Director, with a dotted line to the Director of Programs. This position will play a key role in helping to drive efficiency, quality and impact of our programs in the conservation and climate space. The role requires independent strategic decision-making, effective management of multidisciplinary teams, project planning and budgeting, and frequent domestic and occasional international travel in support of organizational priorities.

We’re Looking For You

The Portfolio Manager will be responsible for three key functions:
  • Drive for higher efficiency, quality and impact through clear processes to enhance portfolio health and contribute to the Portfolio Management Process. This role demands robust collaboration across core program areas and close coordination with conservation teams at both the Asia-Pacific and global level.
  • Help contribute to advancing India’s conservation strategy for 2025-2030, focusing on refining the business model, articulating TNC-India’s unique value, cultivating strategic partnerships, and building the necessary skills and expertise within the team.
  • Offer technical guidance on climate initiatives and strengthen engagement with key ministries, ensuring a cohesive and consistent approach to government relations in support of organizational objectives.

What You’ll Bring

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree and at 5-10 years’ experience in working on environmental, conservation issues or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working in India and working across multiple cultures and time-zones and with diverse groups of staff and partners.
  • Experience in developing program-wide strategies and policies.
  • Written and verbal fluency in English, and one additional regional language (e.g. Hindi)
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, and ability to support and influence with consistent and clear messages and information.
  • Well-organized, self-directed, and a relationship builder.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills (e.g., communication, emotional intelligence, conflict management).

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working on a range of different environmental issues, particularly in India.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with partners and donors in the conservation and climate space. Experience in working with government entities in India.
  • High degree of familiarity with current and evolving trends in conservation, politics, and socio-cultural issues in India, and strong networks in the government.
  • Fundraising and grant writing experience.
  • Excellent team player with experience working in multi-disciplinary teams, using influence and interpersonal skills, active listening, maturity and diplomacy to build strong relationships.
  • People-oriented, intuitive, collaborative, creative, adaptable, exacting, comfortable with ambiguity and risk, and alignment with TNC values.
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
