Job Description

Role Context

Own database administration and operational excellence for both SQL and NoSQL data stores across on-prem and cloud-managed environments. The DBA will partner with engineering, data, and QA teams to provide performance guidance, define operational runbooks, and ensure systems are tuned, resilient, secure, and calibrated for evolving workloads (ETL, APIs, analytics, and ML workloads where applicable).

Key Responsibilities

Administer and support SQL and NoSQL databases across environments (DEV/QA/UAT/PROD).

Own database performance management: indexing, partitioning, query plan analysis, parameter tuning, and workload optimization.

Provide performance guidance to teams: schema design feedback, query rewrite recommendations, and access pattern optimization.

Define operational guidelines: backup/restore, DR, replication, patching, maintenance windows, capacity planning.

Calibrate systems for workload patterns: concurrency, connection pooling, cache sizing, I/O tuning, and resource governance.

Implement monitoring and alerting for DB health (availability, latency, slow queries, locks, storage).

Manage security: roles/permissions, encryption, key management integrations, auditing and compliance practices.

Support incident response: troubleshooting outages, RCA, preventive actions, and reliability improvements.

Collaborate with DevOps/SRE teams on infrastructure provisioning and automation.

Must Have

Strong DBA experience across at least one major RDBMS: PostgreSQL / MySQL / Oracle / SQL Server.

Practical experience with at least one NoSQL system: MongoDB / Cassandra / Redis / Elasticsearch (as applicable to your stack).

Advanced SQL expertise including execution plans, indexing strategies, lock analysis, and performance tuning.

Experience with cloud-managed database services on AWS/Azure/GCP:

Examples: RDS/Aurora, Azure SQL/Managed Instance, Cloud SQL, Cosmos DB, DynamoDB, etc.

Strong understanding of HA/DR patterns: replication, failover, backups, PITR, and recovery testing.

Operational discipline: change management, release readiness, environment standardization, SOPs/runbooks.

Delivery/DevOps fundamentals: Git-based configuration/versioning, CI/CD awareness for DB changes (migration tooling), automation mindset.

Non-technical: strong collaboration, ability to communicate performance recommendations clearly, ownership during incidents.

Good To Have

Experience with data platforms/warehouses: Snowflake/Redshift/BigQuery/Synapse.

Knowledge of database migration tooling (Flyway/Liquibase) and schema versioning practices.

Observability tooling exposure (CloudWatch/Azure Monitor/Stackdriver, Prometheus, Grafana, ELK).

Familiarity with Kubernetes operators for databases or DB on containers (where relevant).

Exposure to ETL workload patterns and data engineering ecosystems.
