Experience: 8 - 13 years
What we are looking for:
Someone who can lead the mechanical design and development of advanced Weapon Upgradation Kits and Electro-Optical Systems, including thermal imaging night vision, and day optics. This role encompasses the full product development. Person will lead the mechanical design and development of Lifecycle-from concept design to product realization and lifecycle management. Adherence to project timelines, along with the ability to lead and mentor mechanical. The position demands a focus on innovation, high-quality standards, cost efficiency, and project teams.
What you will do:
Mechanical Design & Development
- Lead and execute end-to-end mechanical design lifecycle — from concept, feasibility, and prototyping to production release — ensuring timely project execution and updates.
- Design and review 3D mechanical models using CAD tools (SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, NX) for weapon upgradation kits (buttstocks, pistol grips, rails, helmet mounts) and electro-optical assemblies.
- Perform design-for-manufacturability and assembly (DFMA) for components involving injection molding, machining, casting, and sheet metal fabrication, considering draft, wall thickness, undercuts, parting lines, and ribs.
- Conduct detailed design analyses (thermal, stress, fit, form, ingress protection, impact kinetics) and FEA simulations using ANSYS/Abaqus to ensure structural integrity and performance.
Documentation & Quality Assurance
- Generate and maintain comprehensive design documentation including manufacturing drawings, exploded views, assembly guides, BOMs, and SAP uploads.
- Apply and interpret GD&T (ASME Y14.5/ISO) to ensure precision, functional fit, and interchangeability; define datum structures and tolerances for manufacturability and inspection readiness.
- Conduct tolerance stack-up analysis, first-article inspections, CMM measurements, PPAP reviews, and support DFMEA, PFMEA, and DVP&R activities.
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards (RoHS, REACH, MIL-STD) and maintain robust design control processes.
Supplier, Manufacturing & Field Support
- Manage suppliers and vendors for prototype and component manufacturing, ensuring adherence to quality and timelines.
- Troubleshoot and resolve design issues during development, testing, and production phases; perform root cause analysis and develop corrective actions.
- Optimize production methods through DFMA principles and cost-effective manufacturing solutions.
- Lead mechanical efforts during field trials, gather user feedback, and iterate designs for improved ergonomics, durability, and mission-readiness.
Cross-functional Collaboration & External Coordination
- Coordinate with Electrical, Electronics, Firmware, Manufacturing, QA, SCM, and Engineering teams to ensure smooth product integration and project execution.
- Liaise with OEMs for compliance documentation, certifications, authorizations, and tender QRs.
- Support demonstrations, exhibitions, and client interactions; modify existing designs to meet evolving technical or customer requirements.
Leadership, Innovation & Governance
- Lead and mentor the mechanical design team, driving adherence to design standards, best practices, and professional development.
- Foster innovation by exploring advanced materials, manufacturing processes (CNC, additive manufacturing, molding), and cost-optimized solutions.
- Define strategic direction for mechanical design capabilities aligned with future product and market needs.
- Safeguard design data and intellectual property as per defense cybersecurity and company IP policies.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Education & Experience: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent discipline, with 8–15 years of experience in mechanical design for precision electro-optical or defense-grade systems, including at least 3 years in a senior or lead engineering role.
- Technical Expertise: Strong hands-on proficiency in 3D CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, and NX, including advanced surfacing techniques (boundary, loft, fill, etc.). Skilled in applying GD&T principles (ASME Y14.5 / ISO) for production drawings, inspection planning, and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Engineering Analysis & Design: Proficient in FEA tools like ANSYS and Abaqus for thermal and structural analysis, with a deep understanding of machining, casting, sheet metal, and plastic molding processes. Experienced in applying design-for-manufacturability (DFM) and assembly (DFA) principles to ensure production readiness and cost efficiency.
- Systems & Standards: Familiar with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems, engineering documentation, and configuration control. Exposure to ISO and defense standards including MIL-STD (810/883) and JS 55555, with practical understanding of ruggedized and mission-critical design requirements.
- Project & Team Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead mechanical design projects, manage cross-functional teams, and deliver within defined timelines. Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to guide teams and collaborate effectively across disciplines.
- Operational & Supplier Management: Proven capability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, coordinate with suppliers for prototype development and manufacturability reviews, and manage rapid prototyping cycles.
- Tools & Processes: Working knowledge of SAP or equivalent ERP systems for BOM management and engineering change processes.
- Domain Knowledge: Sound understanding of weapon systems, thermal cameras, night vision devices, and electro-optical sensor technologies, along with experience engaging with government labs, OEMs, defense integrators, and product certification authorities.
