Principal Aviation Terminal Architect

to lead and significantly enhance our airport terminal building concept design and planning capabilities. This individual will be a strategic leader, responsible for driving design excellence, securing major strategic pursuits, and building a world-class team. The ideal candidate will be an industry thought leader with a proven track record of successful, large-scale airport terminal projects from concept to master planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Master Planning
    • Lead the development and implementation of long-term airport terminal masterplans, considering future growth, operational needs, and technological advancements.
    • Conduct thorough analysis of passenger forecasts, aircraft movements, and operational requirements to inform planning decisions.
    • Define terminal layouts, gate allocations, baggage handling systems, security checkpoints, and other critical infrastructure elements.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant international and local aviation regulations, standards, and best practices (e.g., ICAO, ACI, IATA-ADRM, DGCA, etc.).
  • Architectural Design & Development
    • Conceptualize and develop innovative and aesthetically pleasing terminal designs that enhance the passenger experience.
    • Prepare detailed architectural drawings, specifications, and material selections, ensuring functionality, safety, and sustainability.
    • Utilize BIM (Building Information Modeling) software (e.g., Revit) and other relevant design tools to create and manage project designs.
    • Integrate sustainability principles and green building practices (e.g., LEED) into terminal designs.
  • Team Leadership & Collaboration
    • Lead and mentor a team of airport planners and designers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
    • Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources effectively.
    • Collaborate closely with internal stakeholders (e.g., operations, engineering, commercial) and external partners (e.g., airport authorities, airlines, consultants).
    • Present design concepts and plans to stakeholders, incorporating feedback and ensuring alignment with project objectives.
  • Technical Expertise & Innovation
    • Stay abreast of the latest trends and innovations in airport terminal design, technology, and operational efficiency.
    • Apply knowledge of passenger flow optimization, wayfinding strategies, and security technologies in design solutions.
    • Evaluate and recommend new technologies and design approaches to enhance terminal performance and passenger experience.
    • Ensure the technical accuracy and quality of all planning and design deliverables.
  • Project Management & Delivery
    • Oversee the planning and design phases of airport terminal projects from inception to completion.
    • Coordinate with other disciplines (e.g., civil, structural, MEP) to ensure seamless integration of designs.
    • Monitor progress, identify potential risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
    • Ensure that designs are constructible, cost-effective, and meet project requirements.
Here's what you'll need
  • Architectural Degree Bachelor's or master’s degree in architecture from a recognized institution.
  • Professional Registration Licensed/Registered Architect in a relevant jurisdiction.
  • Extensive Experience Minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in airport terminal planning and design, with a proven track record of leading significant projects. This includes a minimum of 1-2 Terminal projects with more than 10MPPA (Million Passengers Per Annum) capacity, preferably 20MPPA.
  • Leadership Experience Proven experience in leading design teams and managing complex projects effectively.
  • Market Recognition Demonstrated recognition as a market leader or subject matter expert in airport terminal design, evidenced by publications, speaking engagements, or successful project portfolios.
  • Project Portfolio A strong portfolio showcasing successful large-scale international airport terminal projects.
  • Technical Proficiency Deep understanding of airport operations, terminal layouts, passenger flow, baggage handling systems, and security requirements.
  • Software Proficiency Proficiency in architectural design software, including AutoCAD, Revit (or similar BIM software), and other relevant graphic design tools. Familiarity with any recognised airport simulation software used for design validation is preferred.
  • Regulatory Knowledge Strong understanding of relevant international and local aviation regulations and standards (IATA-ADRM, ICAO, ACI, DGCA, etc.).
  • Communication Skills Excellent leadership, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively convey complex design concepts to diverse stakeholders.
  • Analytical & Problem-Solving Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Work Ethic Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on domestic as well as international airport projects.
  • Knowledge of sustainable design principles and certifications (e.g., LEED).
