The objective of this role is to project and program manage the governance framework in partnership with GS Business Units and Partners to help develop procedures and additional standards that lay the foundation for the Operational Risk and Controls strategy for Global Services in India. The team is envisioned to set up a foundational governance framework that can help BUs proactively identify process gaps, mitigating risks leading to a progressively compliant organization among the ever changing Regulatory landscape.
Primary focus of the role is to ensure control management is embedded in the day-to-day operations of our organization in the midst of every changing and evolving Regulatory landscape. This role will function as a proactive First Line of Defense (1LOD) to support the business in managing compliance risk across products, processes, and customer interactions. This role will play a key part in ensuring that day-to-day operations align with regulatory requirements and internal policies, while collaborating with multiple partners across numerous business units, functional areas, and geographies, including but not limited to business, GBI and compliance partners. The ideal candidate has strong regulatory knowledge, a process mindset, and the ability to translate risk concepts into practical actions.
This role would require outstanding leadership and influencing skills, strong personal accountability of delivery of complex change management initiatives, extensive knowledge of American Express products, processes, and platforms, strong project management discipline and exceptional communication skills.
· Extensive collaboration with but not limited to, global functional teams across all Business Function Leads, stakeholders, controls functions and GBI and Strategy teams for effective implementation and delivery of high priority projects and program management to build operational risk framework to enable effective risk management across multifunctional Operations teams.
· Act as a compliance risk advisor to front-line business teams, helping them understand and comply with applicable regulatory obligations.
· Support the execution of compliance risk assessments and ongoing monitoring activities within the business unit.
· Partner with operations, product, and technology teams to design and enhance controls that mitigate regulatory and operational risks.
· Monitor business activities for compliance with laws, regulations, and internal standards (e.g., CEPD, UIDAI, Consumer Protection and Fairness, Privacy, Ombudsman, AML, etc).
· Track and remediate compliance issues and control gaps identified through monitoring, audits, or regulatory exams.
· Maintain and update business-level compliance documentation, including procedures, control descriptions, and training materials.
· Collaborate with second line Compliance, Legal, CISO and Operational Excellence teams on policy interpretation, regulatory change implementation, and incident response.
· Support compliance testing, audit readiness, and business responses to regulatory inquiries and examinations.
· Assist with delivery of compliance-related training to business staff.
· Contribute to reporting of compliance metrics and trends to business leadership.
· Oversee the transition of process, procedures and governance framework across CFRO and Global Services through Fusion
· Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, law, or a related discipline.
· 3+ years of experience in compliance, risk management, or control-related roles in financial services.
· Working knowledge of key Indian banking regulations (e.g., CEPD, UIDAI, Consumer Protection and Fairness, Privacy, Ombudsman, AML, etc)
· Experience supporting compliance or operational risk within a business or first line function.
· Candidates with over 12 years of experience, with an MBA/Masters would be preferred. Knowledge of / Certifications in Agile Framework, Project Management, PMP etc. would be an added advantage.
· Internal Audit experience in Compliance disciplines
· Consulting experience at large Banks in 1st or 2nd line Compliance departments
· Familiarity with issue management, risk assessments, and control testing processes.
· Experience working in a matrixed environment or with cross-functional teams.
· Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills
· Ability to analyze regulatory requirements and apply them in a business context
· Proactive, self-motivated, and comfortable managing multiple priorities
· Sound judgment and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to influence a broad group of stakeholders across the organization, at all levels.
· Able to demonstrate driving success in large complex multi-market change efforts in an agile environment, working with senior level stakeholders in highly-matrixed organizations, and of being able to lead and influence without direct authority.
· Strong enterprise thinking, organization abilities & communication skills. Is able to communicate complex topics in a clear and effective manner, adapting communications based on the audience.
· Knowledge of payments regulation and its impact on payment networks, acquirers and issuers; keen interest in developments in the Reg-Tech space.
