Job Summary
As Technical Lead / Technical Architect, you will be responsible for defining and driving the technical vision, architecture, and engineering excellence for the Zato platform. You will lead architectural design decisions, establish technical standards, mentor engineering teams, and ensure the platform is built with scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability. This is a hands-on technical leadership role combining strategic architecture with deep involvement in implementation.
Key Responsibilities
Architecture and Design:
- Define and own the overall technical architecture for the Zato platform including backend services, frontend applications, databases, integrations, and infrastructure
- Design scalable, resilient, and secure system architectures that support current requirements and future growth
- Establish architectural principles, design patterns, and best practices across the engineering organization
- Lead architectural design discussions for major features, integrations, and system components
- Evaluate and select technology stack, frameworks, libraries, and third-party services
- Design microservices architecture, API contracts, data models, and integration patterns
- Ensure architectural alignment across backend (Python/Django/FastAPI), frontend (React), database (PostgreSQL), and cloud infrastructure (AWS)
Technical Leadership:
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to backend, frontend, and full-stack developers
- Lead code reviews, architectural reviews, and technical design reviews to maintain code quality and architectural integrity
- Establish coding standards, development guidelines, and engineering best practices
- Drive technical decision-making and resolve technical conflicts or trade-offs
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, continuous learning, and innovation within the engineering team
- Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices, and evaluate their applicability to Zato
Hands-On Development:
- Contribute to critical and complex features through hands-on coding and implementation
- Build proof-of-concepts and technical prototypes to validate architectural decisions
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in production and staging environments
- Participate in on-call rotations for critical system incidents and provide technical leadership during outages
Integration and Scalability:
- Design integration architecture for third-party systems (Xero, XPM) ensuring reliability, data consistency, and error handling
- Optimize system performance, scalability, and resource utilization to support growing user base and data volumes
- Design caching strategies, database optimization, and asynchronous processing patterns
- Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity capabilities
Security and Compliance:
- Establish security architecture and best practices including authentication, authorization, encryption, and data protection
- Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (GDPR, local data protection laws) and security standards
- Conduct security reviews, threat modeling, and vulnerability assessments
- Work with DevOps and infrastructure teams to implement security controls and monitoring
Collaboration:
- Collaborate closely with product managers to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Work with engineering managers to plan sprints, estimate effort, and manage technical debt
- Partner with DevOps teams to define infrastructure requirements, deployment strategies, and CI/CD pipelines
- Engage with QA teams to establish testing strategies, automation frameworks, and quality standards
- Communicate technical concepts, trade-offs, and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- 3+ years experience in technical leadership; 8–10 years of software engineering experience overall
- Deep expertise in backend development using Python (Django, FastAPI, Flask) and building RESTful APIs
- Strong experience with frontend technologies (React, JavaScript/TypeScript) and full-stack development
- Expert knowledge of database design, optimization, and management (PostgreSQL, SQL, NoSQL)
- Proven experience designing and implementing scalable, distributed, cloud-based systems on AWS (EC2, RDS, S3, Lambda, etc.)
- Strong understanding of microservices architecture, API design, event-driven architectures, and integration patterns
- Experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitLab CI), and infrastructure as code
- Deep knowledge of security best practices including OAuth 2.0, JWT, encryption, and secure coding practices
- Experience with system monitoring, logging, and observability tools (CloudWatch, ELK stack, Prometheus, Grafana)
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues
- Excellent communication skills with ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience with AI/ML integration, model deployment, or intelligent features is highly desirable
- Understanding of accounting workflows, financial data structures, and compliance requirements is a plus
- Familiarity with Xero API, practice management tools, or accounting software ecosystems is beneficial
- Leadership and mentoring experience with demonstrated ability to inspire and grow engineering talent
- Passion for engineering excellence, clean code, and continuous improvement
