Substation Design Manager
with deep expertise in the
complete electro-mechanical design of mobile substations at 132 kV voltage level
. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with strong design, engineering leadership, and project execution capabilities in high-voltage power systems. The candidate will be responsible for end-to-end design, integration, and technical validation of mobile substation solutions, ensuring compliance with international standards, safety regulations, and customer specifications.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, and deliver the complete design of 132 kV mobile substations, including conceptual layouts, engineering calculations, BOM, specifications, and detailed drawings.
- Design and integrate essential components such as Power Transformers, GIS Switchgear, Protection & Control Panels, Auxiliary Transformers, DC Systems, Battery Banks, Earthing Systems, Insulators, Cables, Instrumentation, and HVAC.
- Ensure optimized design solutions that meet technical, operational, safety, and environmental requirements for mobility, compactness, and rapid deployment.
- Oversee electrical, mechanical, and structural aspects including trailer/chassis layout, cable routing, interconnections, insulation coordination, thermal calculations, and vibration considerations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including civil, mechanical, protection, testing, and procurement engineers to ensure seamless engineering integration.
- Review vendor drawings, OEM datasets, material specifications, test plans, and manufacturing quality documents.
- Lead technical discussions with clients, EPC partners, utility stakeholders, and certifying agencies.
- Ensure compliance with IEC/IEEE standards, utility codes, grid interconnection requirements, and QA/QC procedures.
- Support tender engineering, cost estimation, product configuration, and proposal documentation for mobile substation projects.
- Guide design reviews, FAT, SAT, and commissioning support for mobile substation deployment.
- Provide mentorship and technical direction to designers, engineers, and drafting teams.
Required Skills & Expertise
- Proven experience in electro-mechanical design of high-voltage substations, with a minimum of 5+ years specifically in mobile or skid-mounted substation design preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Power Transformers, GIS, Circuit Breakers, Disconnectors, CTs/VTs, Surge Arresters, Relay & Control Systems, LV & MV distribution, and battery-based auxiliary systems.
- Expertise in 132 kV system engineering, protection philosophy, insulation coordination, short-circuit calculations, grounding design, thermal analysis, and electrical clearances.
- Proficient in engineering software such as AutoCAD, EPLAN, ETAP, DigSilent, CYME, or equivalent.
- Familiarity with mobile substation trailer design, mechanical load dynamics, lifting/transport regulations (desirable).
- Thorough understanding of relevant standards (IEC, IEEE, IS, ANSI, NEMA, etc.).
- Strong documentation, technical writing, and engineering calculation skills.
- Ability to manage multiple design packages, vendor engineering coordination, and project timelines.
- Excellent problem-solving mindset, with strong attention to safety, reliability, and quality in engineering decisions.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or related field.
- 12-25 years of professional experience, preferably with EPCs, OEMs, utility engineering teams, or specialized mobile/substation design companies.
- Experience working on international/mobile substation projects will be an added advantage
