Software Engineer

Overview

We are looking for a Software Engineer to help us build and evolve our highly distributed and scalable applications. A successful candidate will be a well-rounded software development engineer with a proven track record of delivering application/services at scale in an Agile environment.Avalara is the worldwide leader in sales and use tax calculation. The work we do is fundamental to electronic commerce. We're the first to admit it - sales tax isn't cool. But revolutionizing fundamental business processes -- that's big time. And that's what we're doing every day, bringing technology to bear on the arcane process of international tax solutions like automatic HS classification

Responsibilities

• Champion design and implementation of new features and maintaining existing features
• Collaborate with team, cross functional teams, and other stakeholders to understand requirements and come up with the best technical solution which are simple and intuitive
• Collaborate effectively with team members and expert groups on code reviews and test plans with an eye towards automation
• Work across all phases of the development lifecycle (planning, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and support)
• Follow agile/scrum processes
• Address non-functional requirements like security, performance, and load for the product
  

Qualifications

Qualifications

• Bachelor/master's degree in computer science or equivalent
• Minimum of 2+ years of experience in a software development role, shipping complex applications to large scale production environments
• Excellent knowledge of RESTful web services and API standards
• Experience in engineering for highly available and fault tolerant software
• Strong Java programming skills
• Demonstrable front end development experience using a major framework (preferably Vue)
• Solid understanding of HTML, ES/JS, with CSS experience
• Experience with monitoring and alerting tools, and analyzing system metrics to determine root cause analysis
• Familiar with SQL databases
• Knowledge of architectural styles and design patterns to solve complex problems with simple intuitive design
• Experience in working in an Agile team
• Passion to see your product be the best in the business
• Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to precisely conform to design standards using CSS
• Experience setting up CI\CD pipeline (GitLab, Terraform)
• Experience building platforms and libraries that are self-contained, extendable, and ready for wide scale consumption
• Exposure to additional Cloud technologies
• Experience with tools like JIRA and Confluence
