Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and technically strong
Senior Manager – Civil Design
to lead the civil/structural design function for utility‑scale solar PV power projects. The candidate will lead a team of civil/design engineers and coordinate all civil/structural design deliverables — from conceptual design and pre‑bid stage through detailed design, vendor drawing reviews, to final “construction‑ready” drawings and engineering packages. The Senior Manager will also coordinate with electrical/structural/other disciplines and with construction/ procurement teams to ensure designs are practical, cost‑effective, safe, compliant, and aligned with project requirements.
Key Roles & Responsibilities
- Design Leadership & Delivery
Lead and manage all civil/structural design activities for solar projects, including foundations, module‑mounting structure (MMS) foundations, equipment foundations (inverters, transformers, switchgear), control-room/room‑buildings, drainage, grading / land levelling, internal roads, boundary fences/walls, compound works, and associated infrastructure.
Oversee preparation, review and approval of detailed civil design drawings, structural calculations (soil/foundation, load, wind, seismic as applicable), BOM/BOQ (Bill of Quantities), technical specifications and design documentation.Manage a team of design engineers, draughtsmen and/or consultants — allocate tasks, set milestones, review deliverables, ensure quality, and enforce adherence to timelines.
- Cross‑Discipline Coordination & Integration
Coordinate civil‑design efforts with electrical, mechanical (if any), procurement, and construction teams — ensure integration of civil layout/design with electrical layout, cable routes, equipment placement, and overall plant architecture.
Interface with geotechnical survey, topographic data, survey teams to incorporate soil and site‑specific inputs into designs, ensuring stability, SAP/ETABS/STAAD or equivalent design validation.Review vendor/sub‑contractor drawings and submittals related to civil/structural or civil‑mechanical scope, provide technical feedback, approve or recommend revisions for compliance and constructability.
- Pre‑Bid, Tender & Vendor Management Support
Participate in pre‑bid civil engineering assessment — analyze feasibility, soil reports, site constraints, grading/earthwork needs, access roads, drainage; provide inputs on civil scope, cost estimation, BOQ and risk areas.
Prepare civil scope packages for tender/RFQ including drawings, specifications, quantity take‑offs, scope descriptions; evaluate vendor offers from civil/structural contractors on technical aspects.Provide technical guidance during vendor selection, contract finalization, and negotiation (civil scope) ensuring vendor capability and compliance with standards.
- Quality Assurance, Standards & Compliance
Ensure all civil/structural designs comply with relevant structural codes and standards (e.g. local/regional geotechnical standards, building codes, foundation standards, seismic/wind loading norms, drainage/stormwater norms etc.) and are fit for purpose for solar plant operations.
Establish and enforce internal design quality procedures — design reviews, check‑lists, peer‑checks, revision control, documentation standards.Work with QA/QC and safety departments to ensure designs meet site safety requirements, environmental and HSE norms, and construction feasibility.
- Project Support & Construction Interface
Support construction teams with design clarifications, as‑built modifications, site‑feedback incorporation and design revisions when necessary.
Provide on‑site support during early civil works execution (foundations, grading, roads), coordinate with QA/QC, survey, civil site management to ensure civil execution aligns with approved designs.Ensure integration of civil deliverables with electrical, mechanical, mounting‑structure, grounding and other scopes, minimizing site conflicts and rework.
- Team Management, Mentoring & Process Improvement
Mentor junior/design‑engineers — foster skill development in structural design, solar‑specific plant civil design, document management, vendor drawing reviews.
Define and monitor design team KPIs — quality, delivery timelines, number of projects handled, vendor compliance, design revision rates.Continuously improve design processes, standardize design templates/packages (foundation templates, drainage layouts, civil scope checklists, as‑built drawing procedures) for better repeatability and efficiency across projects.
- Liaison & Stakeholder Management
Interface with clients, consultants, regulatory authorities, geotechnical teams, and vendors for design approvals, soil & site investigations, drawing submissions, and compliance documentation.Represent the civil‑design function in project meetings — bid reviews, technical reviews, coordination meetings — and communicate civil design status, risks, dependencies to senior management.
Qualifications & Skills
Education:
B.E. / B.Tech in Civil Engineering / Structural Engineering (or equivalent). A Master’s or higher degree in Structural / Infrastructure Engineering is a plus.
Technical Expertise
Strong knowledge of foundation design (soil‑foundation interaction, pile or raft foundations), structural design (RCC, steel, mounting structure foundations), site grading/earthworks, drainage & storm‑water management, roads and civil infrastructure.Proficiency in structural design and analysis software (e.g. STAAD, ETABS, Revit / BIM, AutoCAD / Civil‑3D) for drawing generation, structural calculations, and design documentation.Familiarity with geotechnical inputs (soil reports, surveys, site-specific constraints), soil mechanics, site leveling and terrain adaptability.Understanding of civil codes, standards, environmental, drainage, safety and HSE regulations relevant to solar / industrial / large-scale projects.
