Role Overview

The Planning Engineer is responsible for developing, monitoring, and controlling fabrication and project schedules for shipbuilding and heavy steel structures. The role ensures that production activities are planned efficiently, resources are optimally utilized, and projects are completed within the defined timelines, quality standards, and cost parameters.

Key Responsibilities

1. Project Planning & Scheduling

• Develop detailed project schedules for steel fabrication, assembly, and erection activities using tools such as MS Project or Primavera.
• Break down project scope into work packages (WBS) and sequence activities with accurate timelines.
• Estimate man-hours, machine hours, and material requirements for each stage of fabrication.

2. Production Coordination

• Coordinate daily with production, design, procurement, and QA/QC teams to align schedules and priorities.
• Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly production plans based on project deadlines and capacity.

3. Monitoring & Progress Tracking

• Track fabrication progress of plates, profiles, blocks, and modules against planned schedules.
• Identify bottlenecks, delays, and resource shortages; escalate issues proactively.
• Update progress charts, dashboards, and provide daily/weekly reports to management.

4. Resource & Material Planning

• Plan and optimize utilization of manpower, machinery (cutting, bending, welding, blasting, painting), and shop floor capacity.
• Coordinate with the procurement team for timely availability of steel materials, consumables, and tools.
• Ensure inventory accuracy and support material forecasting.

5. Technical Documentation & Drawings

• Review fabrication drawings, nesting plans, and BOMs to assess workload and schedule requirements.
• Ensure planning data is aligned with design changes and revision control.

6. Cost & Productivity Analysis

• Monitor production productivity and compare actual man-hours vs. planned man-hours.
• Provide cost impact analysis for schedule variations and suggest corrective actions.

7. Quality, Safety & Compliance

• Ensure planning considers quality requirements, inspection stages, and class society rules.
• Integrate safety considerations into scheduling (hot work, lifting, confined space).

8. Client & Stakeholder Coordination

• Participate in project review meetings with clients, consultants, and internal departments.
• Prepare documentation required for project audits and client reporting.

Skills & Competencies Required

• Strong expertise in project planning software (Primavera P6 / MS Project).
• Knowledge of shipbuilding processes: plate cutting, bending, block fabrication, outfitting.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings, fabrication sequences, and BOMs.
• Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and coordination skills.
• Understanding of safety and quality standards used in shipyards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Naval Architecture / Industrial Engineering.
• Minimum 3 years of experience in heavy steel fabrication or shipbuilding planning roles.
• Working knowledge of ERP systems (optional but preferred).

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: ₹60,000.00 - ₹80,000.00 per month
