Role Overview

You will design, plan, and execute projects to mitigate urban flooding and control coastal erosion. Your work will include hydrologic/hydraulic modelling, structural & nature-based interventions, stakeholder coordination, and ensuring regulatory compliance. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams (engineering, ecology, GIS, policy) to deliver resilient, sustainable outcomes. 

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct hydrological, hydraulic, and morpho dynamic analyses to assess flood risk, shoreline erosion, and storm surge impacts in urban & coastal zones. 
• Develop and run models (1D/2D/3D) for drainage networks, stormwater systems, flood plains and coastline changes using software like HEC-RAS, MIKE, Delft3D, TUFLOW, SWMM, etc. 
• Prepare conceptual designs, detailed drawings, specifications for structural defenses (seawalls, breakwaters, groynes), nature-based solutions (dune restoration, mangroves, vegetated buffer zones), and hybrid combinations. 
• Create GIS-based maps, spatial analyses, and risk maps (erosion hotspots, flood zones), and integrate these with planning documents (city master plans, coastal zone management, disaster management plans). 
• Undertake field work: site surveys (topographic, bathymetric), coastal profile measurement, sediment sampling, tidal monitoring, etc. 
• Produce PPRs / DPRs / feasibility studies: cost estimation, phasing plans, O&M (Operation & Maintenance) frameworks. 
• Ensure designs comply with regulatory frameworks: CRZ/ICZM, coastal zone norms, floodplain regulations, environmental impact standards. 

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Coastal Engineering or equivalent. Masters preferred. 
• Minimum of

  4-7 years

  of relevant experience (for mid-level), including work in flood mitigation, urban drainage/stormwater, or coastal erosion projects. Senior levels ~10+ years. 
• Proven experience with hydrologic/hydraulic modelling tools (e.g. HEC-RAS, MIKE 21/MIKE 3, Delft3D, TUFLOW, SWMM) and GIS platforms (ArcGIS, QGIS). 
• Experience preparing detailed engineering reports, PPRs / DPRs, budgets, tender documents. 
• Strong understanding of coastal geomorphology, sediment transport, shoreline change dynamics, urban stormwater system design. 
• Familiarity with regulatory norms around coastal zones (e.g. CRZ in India), environmental compliance, permitting. 
• Excellent communication skills (technical writing, presentations) and ability to collaborate with multiple stakeholders. 

Desired Skills

• Experience in nature-based solutions (mangrove plantation, dune restoration, littoral buffer design). 
• Knowledge of climate change impacts: sea-level rise projections, high‐intensity rainfall patterns, storm surge modeling. 
• Familiarity with remote sensing / LiDAR / drone surveying for coastal or floodplain mapping. 
• Project management skills: scheduling, cost control, vendor/contractor management. 
• Creative problem solving, ability to balance ecological, social, and technical trade-offs.
