Building Energy Modelor – Climate and Resilience Canada Team WSP, a world-class multi-disciplinary engineering consulting firm, is seeking a Energy Modeler for the Climate and Resilience group. We work closely with architects and owners from around the world on large, complex projects with a focus on sustainability and energy performance of the built environment. JOB REQUISITES Role Summary Climate and Resilience is WSP’s Built Environment Sustainability team, providing a broad range of services including sustainability consulting, high performance design and analysis, building certifications, district-scale solutions, education, facilitation, and project management. We work across a wide range of project types and scales, from horizontal planning and district infrastructure, to vertical design and construction, to ongoing performance and operations. Built Ecology has been directly responsible for driving many leading projects across the globe, including LEED Platinum buildings, Living Building Challenge and WELL projects, net-zero water and energy projects, EcoDistricts, corporate initiatives, and improvements for large building portfolios. Ideal candidates exhibit the following characteristics: WSP, a world-class multi-disciplinary engineering and professional services firm, is seeking a full time BUILDING PERFORMANCE CONSULTANT to support our Built Ecology group. Our team work closely with architects, owners, and teams throughout WSP to advance sustainability, health, and resilience goals on large, complex projects around the world. Built Ecology is WSP’s national Built Environment Sustainability team, providing a broad range of services including sustainability strategy consulting, high performance design and analysis, building certifications, district-scale solutions, training and education, goal setting and workshop facilitation, and integrated project management. We work across a wide range of project types and scales, from horizontal planning and district infrastructure, to vertical design and construction, to ongoing performance and operations. Built Ecology has been directly responsible for driving many leading projects across the globe, including LEED Platinum buildings, Living Building Challenge and WELL projects, net-zero water and energy projects, EcoDistricts, corporate initiatives, and improvements for large building portfolios. We influence strategic decisions for the design of buildings and neighborhoods, infrastructure and landscapes, and organizational outcomes. Through our internship program, we offer an opportunity to experience built environment sustainability services (strategy, analysis, design and implementation) in a project delivery context. Ideal candidates will exhibit the following characteristics: - Passionate about creating a sustainable, healthy, resilient, and equitable built environment - Driven to create solutions that deliver ambitious high-performance building outcomes - Background in energy modeling applications, high-performance building design and mechanical HVAC systems. - Strong verbal, written, and graphic communication Responsibilities Manage a variety of specific tasks with oversight from project managers Provide strategic and technical support and direction to projects that is thoughtful, creative, practical, and effective Produce high quality, visually compelling deliverables Lead detailed energy modeling and building performance analysis activities to achieve established performance targets, LEED certification, energy code compliance, and other energy performance goals Support LEED certification and sustainable design assistance scopes, as well as other certification frameworks such as Zero Carbon Building Standard, Canadian Energy Efficiency Incentive Programs, etc. Utilize energy modeling tools to complete carbon modeling and develop net zero carbon roadmaps Interpret climate information and building use typologies to inform building design strategies Perform daylight analysis to evaluate high-performance design strategies and support project design decisions Write reports detailing analysis activities and design advice Liaise internally to facilitate the achievement of project sustainability objectives Review building documentation for the integration of high-performance design aspects Deliver high performance design analysis and project design advice of a high technical standard, integrated across architecture and building systems Talent is the essence of meeting our client’s objectives, goals and challenges. Key Competencies / Skills / Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Building Science or Built Environment related field 5-8 years of professional working experience in Building Energy Modeling with strong skills in IES Virtual Environment. Other modeling software (EnergyPlus, eQuest, etc.) considered an asset. Knowledge of the building design and construction process, with emphasis on mechanical Knowledge of third-party green building rating systems (LEED, Zero Carbon Building, Passive House etc.) Strong working knowledge of ASHRAE 90.1, 62.1 and 55 standards Knowledge of NECB 2017-2020 standards Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to organize and present design information to clients Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in a building design or building science discipline that could include: Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture, Building Science or similar from a reputable University in United States, United Kingdom or Canada. 3-5+ years of energy modeling experience for high-performance projects, building certification (i.e. LEED, Passive House, Zero Carbon Building Design, EnergyStar, etc.), and energy code compliance 2-3 years experience with IES-VE. Proficient with ModelIT, Apache, ApacheHVAC, MacroFlow, RadianceIES and VistaPro modules. Skilled with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD Familiarity with ASHRAE 90.1, 62.1 and 55 requirements Ability to independently read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings, perform takeoffs and effectively consolidate energy model inputs Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies Preferred Qualifications: Master’s Degree in a building design or building science discipline that could include: Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Architecture, Building Science or similar from a reputable University in United States, United Kingdom or Canada. ASHRAE BEMP certified Scripting skills are an asset, e.g. Python, Grasshopper, Ruby, C# Proficient with detailed building envelope thermal bridging analysis
