Job Description
Job Summary:
The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer acts as a technical consultant or project leader, applies fundamental engineering principles, procedures and techniques to perform complex mechanical engineering assignments. They are responsible for and accountable for the delivery of safe, fit for purpose designs to customer requirements and industry standards. The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer provides project co-ordination and supervision and may serve as the department lead. They will co-ordinate activities for new proposals and new business. They have a very good understanding of a wide range of manufacturing techniques and subsequent design best practices. They are key contributors to estimates defining what tasks are necessary and identifying budget/schedule constraints and identifying risks. They will be expected to lead medium to high value pieces of mechanical design work involving often involving other engineers from the same or differing discipline and non-engineers within the company. This position typically works under general supervision and regularly exercises discretionary and substantial decision-making authority.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Responsible and accountable for the development of equipment interfaces and procurement specifications.

Designs mechanical structures, components, and subsystems and develops new models and processes using in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems.

Prepares design specifications, analysis and recommendations using in-depth analysis to create innovative solutions.

Leads root cause analysis techniques and implements solutions to complex problems using novel and innovative solutions.

Subsystem prototype assembly – Identify, design, build and test subsystems.

Consults and advises bids teams on new proposals.

Prepares, maintains and executes project plans for high value pieces of work.

Reviewing customer requirements. Specifying/Reviewing subsystem requirements and verification methods.

Specifies and consults on test control methods, pass/fail criteria, strategies, apparatus and equipment.

Leads interfaces with customers, contractors, and vendors.
-
Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services.
-
Leads in-house design reviews and technical meetings.
-
Leadership of project teams, delegates project tasks and guides the project team. Influences and guides strategic initiatives and drives change where required.

Advises and implements design proposals to reflect cost, schedule and technical approaches.

Act as design authority to sign off mechanical design outputs from the team.

Monitors project status and progress (SPI and CPI) - Advises correction plans where needed.

Applies and maintains quality standards.

Champions high standard of engineering change and release (PLM).

Keep up to date on the latest Engineering techniques, materials and manufacturing methods.

Mentors and develops junior Engineer and is the SME for teams. .

Assist in the hiring of new mechanical engineering team members.
Minimum Job Requirements:
-
B.E/B.Tech or M.E/M.Tech Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar relevant subject or equivalent supported by extensive relevant design experience.

10+ years of design and or testing of hardware/embedded projects

Experience of design using Creo software
-
Extensive hands-on experience with lab equipment for prototyping, debugging, and validation
-
Familiarity with India based test house facilities and experience of working with India based prototyping suppliers
Skills/Experience/Knowledge

Experience using 3D Solid modelling software Solidworks or equivalent with experience of using CAD data management systems.

Experience preparing estimates for high value pieces of work.

Experience in writing and reviewing technical reports and specifications.

Experience of reviewing and consulting on customer requirements and reviewing/writing subsystem requirements and verification methods.

Experience of designing sheet metal components, good understanding of mould and casting design techniques.

Good interpersonal and influencing skills.

Experience in project plan development, maintenance and execution with proven record.
Desirable:

Previous experience of designing revenue collection equipment including vending machines or special purpose machinery.

Understanding of global compliance such as CE marking, C Tick.

Experience in a scrum methodology.

Ability to conduct complex mechanical engineering calculations.

Good understanding of rapid prototyping methods.

Experience of 3D printing.

Experience of designing plastic injection moulded parts and/or die castings.

Experience using 2D Autocad.

Experience of running simulations such as FEA using ANSYS or equivalent software.
