The Freight Brokerage Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of freight broker activities and building relationships with clients. This position will involve coordinating with freight brokers, carriers, and clients to ensure efficient and cost-effective transportation of goods. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of freight brokerage, supply chain management, and logistics operations, as well as exceptional communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Broker Management & Coordination:
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with freight brokers to secure reliable and cost-effective shipping services.
- Oversee the negotiation of rates, terms, and contracts with freight brokers and carriers.
- Ensure that freight brokers are meeting service level agreements (SLAs) and performance standards.
- Review and analyse broker performance metrics, addressing issues of quality, cost, and delivery timelines.
Sales & Business Development
- Prospect and close new freight brokers, shippers, and carrier partners.
- Own the full sales cycle: lead generation, proposal, negotiation, onboarding.
- Develop and execute business plans and sales campaigns.
Broker / Carrier Relationship Management
- Identify, onboard, and maintain strategic broker and carrier relationships.
- Negotiate rates, contracts, and terms.
- Manage broker performance to ensure quality and reliability.
Logistics & Operations Optimization:
- Collaborate with the operations team to determine the most efficient and cost-effective logistics solutions.
- Monitor shipment schedules, ensuring timely pickups and deliveries.
- Continuously assess transportation processes and identify areas for improvement or cost-saving opportunities.
- Implement best practices and standardized procedures for freight brokerage management.
Problem-Solving & Issue Resolution:
- Resolve operational and service-related issues, including delays, claims, and disputes with freight brokers, customers, and carriers.
- Work with the internal team to handle unexpected logistical challenges and find timely solutions.
- Proactively address potential disruptions to the supply chain and work with brokers to mitigate risks.
Documentation & Compliance:
- Ensure all required documentation is completed accurately and promptly (e.g., bills of lading, shipping instructions, freight invoices).
- Monitor and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements related to shipping and freight brokering.
- Manage payment and invoicing processes, ensuring that all billing disputes are resolved quickly and accurately.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of logistics coordinators and support staff, providing guidance, training, and performance evaluations.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that promotes continuous improvement and high performance.
- Ensure the team stays up to date with industry trends, technology, and best practices.
Reporting & Data Analysis:
- Generate regular reports on freight broker performance, logistics costs, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Provide actionable insights to senior management based on data analysis of shipping trends, delays, and cost breakdowns.
- Maintain accurate records of freight broker activities for auditing and reporting purposes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field. (Preferred)
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in logistics, transportation, or freight brokering, with at least 2 years in a managerial role.
- In-depth knowledge of freight brokerage operations, including rate negotiation, carrier relationships, and industry regulations.
- Strong understanding of supply chain management, transportation modes, and distribution networks.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in logistics software (TMS, WMS, or similar systems) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to analyse data, solve problems, and make decisions quickly.
- Strong leadership abilities and a track record of team development and performance improvement.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Certification from the Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) or similar freight brokering certification.
- Experience working with international shipping and customs regulations.
- Familiarity with emerging technologies in logistics, including automation and digital freight platforms.
