Job Description

A Chartered Accountant (CA) in a construction and sewage treatment plant (STP) company manages overall financial health, provides strategic financial guidance for projects, and ensures compliance with industry-specific regulations. The role requires specialized knowledge of project-based accounting, such as job costing and revenue recognition for long-term contracts. Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting and Analysis: Prepare and analyze financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow statements), budgets, and forecasts. This includes generating comprehensive financial reports that track project performance and profitability.
  • Project Cost Management & Job Costing: Collaborate with project managers to create detailed, cost-effective budgets for individual construction and STP projects. Meticulously track all project-related expenses (labor, materials, equipment, overhead) and compare them to the budgeted amounts, identifying variances and addressing cost overruns promptly.
  • Auditing and Compliance: Conduct internal and external audits to ensure all financial activities comply with local, state, and federal laws, as well as industry-specific accounting standards (like GAAP or IFRS/Ind-AS).
  • Tax Planning and Management: Manage all tax planning, preparation, and filing activities, including GST, TDS, and income tax returns, ensuring compliance with complex tax laws related to the construction sector.
  • Cash Flow Management: Monitor cash inflows and outflows, forecast cash needs for current and future projects, and manage accounts payable and receivable to ensure sufficient liquidity and timely payments to subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Contract and Risk Management: Review complex contracts and agreements from a financial perspective to ensure compliance with terms (e.g., lien waivers, holdback rules) and identify potential financial risks, working with project teams to mitigate them.
  • Process Improvement: Implement and maintain effective accounting systems and internal controls, recommending improvements to financial operations and processes to enhance efficiency.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Liaise with clients, vendors, internal project teams, and auditors, providing accurate financial information and advice to support informed decision-making.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • Qualification: A certified Chartered Accountant (CA) qualification is a fundamental requirement.
  • Experience: Prior experience in construction or project-based accounting is highly preferred due to the unique financial complexities of the industry.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, Sage) and advanced MS Excel skills for data analysis and reporting.
  • Soft Skills: Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills, along with excellent communication and interpersonal abilities to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of construction cost accounting, including material and labor cost structures, revenue recognition practices (like the percentage-of-completion method), and the ability to track change orders.
