Sr SCOM Engineer

Role Summary

The Senior SCOM Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, optimization, and support of Microsoft System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) in a large enterprise environment. This role goes beyond day-to-day monitoring, focusing on improving observability, integrating SCOM with other enterprise tools, and ensuring proactive problem management. The engineer will mentor junior staff, lead monitoring initiatives, and partner with cross-functional teams to drive service excellence.

Key Responsibilities

• SCOM Design & Administration

• Architect and maintain enterprise-grade SCOM infrastructure including management servers, databases, and gateways.
• Develop advanced management packs, custom monitors, and automation for business-critical applications and infrastructure.
• Ensure monitoring coverage is aligned with enterprise SLAs, compliance, and availability requirements.

• Incident, Problem & Change Management

• Act as escalation point for high-priority monitoring incidents, ensuring rapid root-cause identification and resolution.
• Collaborate with L2/L3 teams and vendors to address recurring complex issues.
• Participate in CAB (Change Advisory Board) reviews for monitoring-related changes.

• Optimization & Reporting

• Define monitoring baselines, KPIs, and dashboards for IT leadership visibility.
• Optimize thresholds, alerts, and notification strategies to minimize false positives.
• Provide trend analysis and capacity forecasting to support infrastructure planning.

• Automation & Tool Integration

• Lead automation initiatives using PowerShell and scripting to reduce manual monitoring tasks.
• Integrate SCOM with ITSM and other monitoring platforms (e.g., ServiceNow, SysAid, SolarWinds, Azure Monitor, Splunk).
• Drive adoption of hybrid monitoring solutions for on-premises and cloud workloads.

• Leadership & Mentorship

• Guide and mentor junior engineers in SCOM administration, troubleshooting, and best practices.
• Establish monitoring standards, documentation, and runbooks for L1/L2 teams.
• Contribute to training sessions and knowledge-sharing initiatives across IT operations.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• 5–8 years of hands-on experience managing and architecting SCOM in an enterprise environment.
• Strong expertise in Windows Server, Active Directory, SQL Server, IIS, and Microsoft 365 monitoring.
• Advanced PowerShell scripting skills for automation and reporting.
• Experience integrating SCOM with ITSM tools and hybrid cloud monitoring platforms.
• In-depth knowledge of ITIL processes (Incident, Problem, Change, Service Request).

Preferred Qualifications

• Microsoft certifications such as MCSE: Core Infrastructure, Azure Administrator/Monitor.
• Experience with hybrid monitoring (Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Application Insights).
• Exposure to other enterprise monitoring solutions (SolarWinds, Nagios, Splunk, Dynatrace).
• Experience in capacity planning and infrastructure optimization.
