Job Description

Department: Research Location: Gurugram, India Description Aurora is seeking a Senior Analyst covering Asia-Pacific coal markets to join our subscription energy analytics and client-facing services, based in our Gurugram, India office. You will be a part of Aurora’s Global Energy Markets research team — producing our ongoing research and publications, developing new analysis, identifying client needs, and continuously enhancing the service we provide. We are looking for a Senior Analyst who will be an experienced member of the team, leading analysis on coal markets in Asia-Pacific, speaking to clients, and representing the company externally. The scope of this role will be on global and local thermal coal markets, with a focus on Asia-Pacific, in addition to broader analysis of global commodity markets. The role involves keeping abreast of, and providing insightful client reports on, key developments across Asia-Pacific coal markets, including consideration of how coal will be affected by competition with natural gas, decarbonisation policies, and the emergence of low-carbon technologies. The Global Energy Markets team produces Aurora’s central outlook and scenarios for the development of gas, oil, and coal markets, which underpin Aurora’s analysis of power markets. Although the role is based in our Subscription Analytics team, the successful applicant would also support commodities-focused projects undertaken in our Advisory team — which in the past has included transactions and strategic advisory. Aurora provides a dynamic, intellectually stimulating, and demanding yet supportive environment. Working closely with fellow colleagues in Gurugram and reporting into our team in Oxford, UK, you will enjoy autonomy, the opportunity to substantially influence major decisions in the energy sector, and the chance to grow into an industry expert. This position suits experienced analysts or consultants from top-tier strategic or economic consultancies, energy companies, financial services companies, or knowledge-driven firms or institutions. Prior experience in thermal coal, energy markets, or macroeconomics is essential. Key Responsibilities Lead Aurora’s research in Asia-Pacific thermal coal markets and work closely with Aurora’s modelling and power teams to develop new market forecasts and novel analysis. Research key short- and long-term market trends and conduct analysis of policy developments in internationally traded coal markets, with a focus on Asia-Pacific. Communicate findings to clients through meetings, calls, workshops, and conferences. Contribute to Aurora’s product development, by identifying new opportunities for intellectually interesting and commercially relevant areas of analysis, helping to expand our capabilities, subscription base, and impact. What we are looking for Required attributes: At least two years of experience working around coal markets at an energy firm, mining company, industrial consumer, commodity price reporting agency, leading strategic or economic consultancy, energy trading house or brokerage, economic research institution, related government agency, or financial services firm. Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and interpret complex quantitative data and information. Demonstrated interest in energy markets and commodities, particularly coal. Demonstrated success in project and process management in team-oriented environments, delivering output to a variety of key stakeholders. Self-starter, entrepreneurial mind-set, and desire to grow the business. Competence in data tools (e.g., SQL, PowerBI, advanced Excel). Excellent written communication. Native or professional-level competence in English. Desirable attributes: Experience working with or studying Asia-Pacific coal markets. Demonstrated success in client-facing positions. Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate with both technical and non-technical parties. Knowledge of key financial metrics and economic principles (NPV, IRR, DCF). Academic or practical experience forecasting macroeconomic indicators. First class degree from a top university in a quantitative subject (Energy Science, Economics, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering, Finance). Competence in advanced data analytics (e.g., R, Python, GAMS, Matlab). What we offer The opportunity to substantially influence major decisions in the energy sector. Direct engagement with clients through Aurora conferences, workshops, and webinars. The opportunity to grow into a publicly visible industry expert. A fun, informal, collaborative, and international work culture. A competitive salary package. Access to regular coaching and mentoring sessions and the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals. Access to the Aurora Academy, our training programme offering a range of opportunities to develop your skills within the responsibilities of your role and within the wider context of the industry.
