Job Title: Research Associate – Li-ion Battery Design & Thermal Management (BTMS)
Job Summary
The Research Associate will support the development, analysis, and optimization of Li-ion battery (LIB) systems through detailed cell/module/pack design, mathematical modelling, simulation, and battery thermal management system (BTMS) studies. The role involves working with cross-functional teams to improve battery performance, safety, thermal behavior, and overall system efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
1. LIB Design & Development
Assist in the design and configuration of Li-ion battery cells, modules, and packs.
Perform electrochemical and structural calculations related to energy density, power density, capacity, cycle life, and degradation.
Evaluate materials and components (electrodes, separators, electrolytes, BMS components).
Support prototype development and testing activities.
2. Mathematical Modelling & Simulation
Develop and apply mathematical models for battery performance, charge-discharge behavior, and aging mechanisms.
Build simulation models using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, COMSOL, ANSYS, GT-AutoLion, or equivalent.
Conduct parametric analysis, life-cycle prediction, and optimization studies.
Validate models using experimental data.
3. Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) Study
Perform thermal analysis of cells, modules, and packs to evaluate heat generation and dissipation.
Analyze cooling techniques (air cooling, liquid cooling, PCM, heat pipes, refrigerant-based systems).
Support BTMS schematic development, component selection, and performance assessment.
Conduct CFD/thermal simulations and enhance thermal stability and safety.
4. Testing, Characterization & Data Analysis
Conduct battery testing—electrical, thermal, safety, and lifetime tests.
Analyze large data sets to derive insights for performance improvement.
Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations based on findings.
5. Research & Technical Support
Conduct literature reviews and benchmark emerging battery technologies.
Assist senior researchers/engineers in R&D projects.
Support grant proposals, technical papers, and internal research documentation.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
Required Skills
Experience with BMS algorithms, SOC/SOH estimation.
Familiarity with EV battery standards (ISO, IEC, AIS, UL).
Knowledge of emerging technologies like solid-state batteries, fast charging, thermal runaway mitigation, etc.
Strong understanding of Li-ion battery chemistry, design, and performance parameters.
Proficiency in mathematical modelling and simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, COMSOL, ANSYS, Python, etc.).
Knowledge of battery thermal management principles and CFD/thermal analysis.
Hands-on experience with lab testing equipment is preferred.
Good analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
