Job Description – Quality Head (Machining Unit)

Location: Kolhapur, Maharashtra
Reporting To: Executive Director / Plant Head
Team Size: 3 Quality Engineers / Inspectors

Role Objective

The Quality Head is responsible for end-to-end quality assurance in the CNC machining unit, ensuring that process quality and outgoing product quality consistently meet customer, drawing, and PPAP requirements.

The role is ownership-driven, with clear accountability for zero-defect mindset, system compliance, and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities1. Process Quality Assurance (Core Responsibility)

  • Establish, monitor, and continuously improve process quality controls across all CNC machining operations.
  • Ensure adherence to:
  • Control Plans
  • Process Flow Diagrams
  • PFMEA & linkage to shop-floor controls
  • Define in-process inspection stages (first-off, patrol, last-off).
  • Ensure correct usage of gauges, fixtures, and inspection methods.
  • Drive process capability (Cp / Cpk) improvements where applicable.
  • Identify and eliminate process variation and root causes of defects.

2. Outgoing Quality & Customer Compliance

  • Ensure 100% compliance of outgoing parts with:
  • Engineering drawings
  • Customer specifications
  • PPAP / APQP requirements
  • Ownership of final inspection & dispatch clearance.
  • Review and approve:
  • Inspection reports
  • Dimensional layouts
  • CMM reports
  • Prevent defect leakage through robust final quality gates.
  • Act as the single point of responsibility for outgoing quality.

3. PPAP, Documentation & Quality Systems

  • Full ownership of PPAP preparation, submission, and approval:
  • DFMEA / PFMEA
  • Control Plans
  • Process Flow
  • Dimensional Layouts
  • MSA, SPC, Capability Studies
  • PSW
  • Maintain and improve quality documentation systems.
  • Ensure version control and traceability of:
  • Drawings
  • Inspection standards
  • Quality records
  • Lead customer audits, third-party audits, and internal audits.

4. Engineering & Technical Understanding

  • Strong understanding of engineering drawings:
  • GD&T
  • Datums, tolerances, surface finish, geometrical controls
  • Ability to:
  • Read and interpret CMM reports
  • Correlate drawing requirements with inspection results
  • Deep understanding of CNC machining processes for castings, including:
  • Datum selection on cast components
  • Machining challenges due to casting variation
  • Fixture-related quality issues
  • Collaborate with production and programming teams to improve manufacturability.

5. Team Management & Leadership

  • Lead and mentor a team of 3 quality engineers / inspectors.
  • Allocate responsibilities across:
  • In-process inspection
  • Final inspection
  • Documentation & PPAP
  • Train team on:
  • Drawing interpretation
  • Inspection techniques
  • Quality tools and problem-solving
  • Build a culture of ownership, discipline, and accountability.
  • Conduct performance reviews and skill development plans.

6. Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead root cause analysis using:
  • 8D
  • 5 Why
  • Fishbone
  • Own customer complaints, internal rejections, and rework analysis.
  • Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
  • Drive reduction in:
  • Rejections
  • Rework
  • Customer complaints
  • Work closely with production, planning, and engineering for sustainable improvements.

7. Cross-Functional Coordination

  • Act as a bridge between:
  • Production
  • Engineering
  • Planning
  • Management
  • Participate in:
  • New part development discussions
  • Process change approvals
  • Drawing change impact assessments

Key Skills & CompetenciesTechnical Skills (Must-Have)

  • Strong knowledge of PPAP / APQP
  • Engineering drawing reading & GD&T
  • CMM report interpretation
  • CNC machining process understanding (especially for castings)
  • Quality tools: PFMEA, Control Plan, SPC, MSA, 8D

Managerial & Behavioral Skills

  • People management & leadership ability
  • Structured thinking and decision-making
  • Strong communication with shop-floor and management
  • High ownership and integrity mindset
  • Ability to say “NO” to dispatch when quality is at risk

Experience & Qualification

  • Qualification: BE / Diploma in Mechanical or Production Engineering
  • Experience:
  • 8–15 years in machining quality (preferably castings + CNC)
  • Prior experience as Quality Manager / Quality Lead preferred
  • Experience working with OEM customers (auto / off-highway / tractor / earthmover) is an advantage.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: ₹20,000.00 - ₹40,000.00 per month
