Job Description

Platform Engineer I helps build and evolve our internal developer platform (IDP) and paves paths that enable product teams to provision, deploy, observe, and secure services through self‑service and automation. The platform spans multiple AWS Organizations (80 accounts) as well as GCP (60 projects), together with a shared enterprise platform and security tooling. The role delivers reusable Terraform/Helm modules, CI/CD templates, and policy‑as‑code guardrails so security, observability, and compliance are embedded by default. It partners with squads as a consulting and enablement resource—advising on best practices for IaC, CI/CD, Kubernetes, and secure cloud patterns; pairing when needed to unblock complex tasks; and guiding teams onto golden paths while uplifting skills and improving developer experience. This is a platform‑engineering role with a strong emphasis on automation, enablement, and continuous improvement of the platform as a product, ensuring teams can move fast and safely across our multi‑cloud estate.

Platform enablement (build & evolve)

  • Deliver reusable Terraform modules, Helm charts, CI/CD templates, and reference blueprints that standardize the SDLC across AWS and GCP.
  • Implement GitOps workflows and policy‑as‑code guardrails so security, observability, and compliance are enforced by default.
  • Evolve the developer experience: improve documentation, examples, and the developer portal/golden paths to reduce time‑to‑first‑deploy.
  • Work from a product backlog (epics/stories), prioritizing items that maximize developer outcomes and platform adoption.

Consulting & adoption support

  • Act as an internal advisor to squads that need help adopting platform capabilities; provide hands‑on pairing to unblock infrastructure, CI/CD, and Kubernetes tasks.
  • Guide teams to use platform-paved paths and approved patterns; collect feedback and turn it into platform improvements.
  • Support secure‑by‑default designs and alignment with data protection/compliance requirements via policy‑as‑code and standard templates.

Cloud governance, security & compliance

  • Integrate and utilize enterprise security tools (e.g., Wiz) to identify risks and drive remediation through code, templates, or policies—minimizing manual changes.
  • Maintain landing‑zone guardrails and organization/project baselines for AWS and GCP (identity, networking, logging, monitoring, tagging/FinOps, controls).
  • Contribute to automated evidence and reporting for compliance and platform controls.

Reliability & lifecycle (platform components)

  • Steward the reliability of shared platform services (e.g., Kubernetes control planes, CI/CD runners, artifact registries) via automation-first change, runbooks, and SLO thinking.
  • Perform upgrades, configuration changes, and lifecycle work through pipelines (not click-ops), capturing improvements and learning in docs and code.
  • Partner with SRE/Security/Operations counterparts to ensure platform services are observable, resilient, and auditable.

Cost observability & efficiency

  • Provide cost visibility (dashboards/reports) and advise on cost‑efficient architectures and right‑sizing via guardrails and templates.
  • Recommend and implement cost optimization improvements in platform modules and golden paths (tagging, autoscaling, storage choices, data egress patterns).

Documentation & ways of working

  • Maintain high‑quality documentation (how‑tos, runbooks, reference architectures) and contribute to the developer portal content.
  • Work transparently via Jira/boards and code reviews; help foster inner‑sourcing and re‑use of modules across teams.

Qualifications

Required

  • Hands‑on AWS experience with core services; foundational GCP awareness.
  • Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred); familiarity with Git and Git‑based CI/CD.
  • Fundamentals in Linux, networking (VPC/VNet, subnets, routing, DNS), and containerization (Docker, basic Kubernetes).
  • Scripting for automation (e.g., Bash, Python) and experience with cloud logging/metrics tools.
  • Understanding of DevSecOps concepts; willingness to adopt policy‑as‑code patterns.
    Preferred
  • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or higher cloud certification
  • Experience with Helm, Kubernetes application patterns, and GitOps tooling.
  • Knowledge of Wiz or similar cloud security posture tools.
  • Additional AWS/GCP certifications.
  • Familiarity with configuration management (e.g., Ansible) and developer portals/golden‑path curation.

Additional Information

Product & platform mindset

  • Thinks in platform products and paved paths; optimizes for self‑service, re‑use, and automation over tickets and one‑offs.
  • Uses data and feedback from squads to prioritize and iterate on platform capabilities.

Technical excellence

  • Applies sound engineering practices (reviews, testing, versioning) to IaC, CI/CD, and platform components.
  • Favors automation and GitOps over manual changes; documents decisions and trade‑offs.

Enablement & communication

  • Explains platform patterns clearly to technical and non‑technical stakeholders; pairs respectfully to uplift skills and unblock delivery.
  • Writes clear docs and examples that lower cognitive load for new adopters.

Reliability & security awareness

  • Designs with reliability, observability, and least‑privilege in mind; understands how to embed controls and evidence by default.

Adaptability & growth

  • Learns new tools and patterns quickly; contributes to a culture of continuous improvement and inner‑sourcing.
