Legal Counsel – Direct Tax

Key Responsibilities:

• Advise internal stakeholders on complex issues related to direct taxes including corporate tax, capital gains, MAT, dividend distribution tax, and transfer pricing.
• Represent the company before tax authorities, appellate forums (CIT(A), ITAT), and assist in managing high-stakes tax litigation and dispute resolution.
• Ensure full compliance with all applicable tax laws and regulations, including handling tax audits, assessments, and reassessments.
• Draft and vet legal opinions, submissions, appeals, and supporting documents pertaining to income tax matters.
• Monitor changes in the tax regulatory environment and analyze their impact on business operations.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams (finance, business, strategy, and external advisors) to manage tax risks and support business structuring from a tax efficiency perspective.
• Drive tax litigation strategy and oversee the preparation and presentation of cases before various tax authorities and tribunals.
• Engage with leading law firms and consultants, when required, to manage ongoing or high-value tax cases.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation and internal reporting of ongoing tax matters, risks, and outcomes.
  

Key Requirements:

• LL.B. and/or LL.M. from a recognized law school. Additional qualifications in taxation or commerce will be an added advantage.
• 12–18 years of relevant experience in direct tax advisory and litigation, preferably within large corporates or reputed law firms.
• Proven experience in handling income tax assessments, appellate proceedings, and tax structuring for large business entities.
• Strong understanding of the Indian Income Tax Act, DTAA, and relevant judicial precedents.
• Excellent drafting, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and provide strategic legal guidance under pressure.
• Team player with leadership qualities and the ability to coordinate across departments and external stakeholders.
