Job Purpose/ Summary

Should be responsible for overseeing the operations, management, and performance of the steel melting shop within a steel manufacturing facility. This role requires strategic leadership, operational expertise, and a deep understanding of steel production processes, including furnace operations, safety protocols, equipment maintenance, and production scheduling.

Head of Department - SMS - Process - SteelProduction Oversight: Supervise the steel melting process, ensuring efficiency, quality, and adherence to production targets and schedules.Team Leadership: Manage, train, and develop the team in the steel melting shop. Foster a collaborative environment while ensuring compliance with safety standards and operational procedures.Process Optimization: Continuously monitor and improve production processes to optimize efficiency, reduce downtime, and minimize waste.Quality Control: Ensure that the steel produced meets industry standards and customer specifications. Implement corrective actions as necessary.Maintenance & Equipment Management: Oversee the proper maintenance of melting furnaces, ladles, and other key equipment. Ensure minimal downtime and ensure equipment is operated safely.Safety & Compliance: Maintain a safe working environment by ensuring all safety protocols are followed. Conduct regular safety audits and take corrective actions where necessary.Budget & Resource Management: Manage the departmental budget, including labor, material costs, and other operational expenses. Ensure resources are allocated effectively and within budget constraints.Collaboration & Reporting: Work closely with other departments such as production, quality, and logistics to ensure smooth operations. Provide regular reports on performance, production, and issues to senior management.

Principal Accountabilities

Lead and supervise the daily operations of the Steel Melting Shop.Manage and develop a team of engineers, supervisors, and operators to ensure efficient operations.Foster a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the team.Conduct performance evaluations, training, and development of team members.Plan, coordinate, and oversee steel melting operations to meet production goals and schedules.Ensure the availability of raw materials, equipment, and manpower to support production targets.Monitor and control production processes to optimize performance, minimize waste, and meet quality standards.Implement best practices and process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.Ensure that all equipment in the melting shop, such as electric arc furnaces (EAF., induction furnaces, and related systems, are maintained and operated optimally.Troubleshoot and resolve any production-related issues promptly to minimize downtime.Ensure that steel products meet quality specifications and customer requirements.Collaborate with the Quality Control department to perform inspections and implement corrective actions when necessary.Monitor the chemical composition of molten steel and adjust the process as needed.Ensure adherence to all safety protocols and regulatory requirements within the SMS.Lead safety initiatives, conduct safety audits, and address any potential hazards.Promote a clean and safe working environment by enforcing safety policies and procedures.Prepare and manage the budget for the Steel Melting Shop, ensuring cost-effective operations.Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs. to track cost, productivity, and quality.Identify cost-saving opportunities and implement measures to reduce production costsEnsure that all steel melting equipment is well-maintained and operating at peak performance.Coordinate with the Maintenance department to schedule preventive maintenance and handle breakdowns effectively.Develop and implement strategies for upgrading or replacing aging equipment as necessary.Work closely with other departments (such as Casting, Rolling Mills, Maintenance, and Quality Control. to ensure smooth workflow and meet production objectives.Report on production performance, safety, and other key metrics to senior management regularly.Address any customer or internal complaints related to production, quality, or deadlines.
