Overview
The Imports Manager oversees all import operations to ensure the timely and lawful acquisition of aluminium-related materials, such as raw materials (bauxite, alumina), scrap, and finished products. This role requires strong organizational, negotiation, and problem-solving skills, with a deep understanding of international trade laws, tariffs, and customs procedures.
Key responsibilities
- Supplier management: Identify, evaluate, and develop relationships with international suppliers. Negotiate contracts, pricing, and delivery terms to ensure a secure and cost-effective supply chain.
- Procurement and logistics: Manage the end-to-end import process, including order placement, tracking shipments, and coordinating with logistics providers, freight forwarders, and customs brokers to ensure timely delivery.
- Regulatory compliance: Ensure strict adherence to all local and international import/export laws, regulations, and customs procedures. This includes managing all necessary documentation, such as bills of lading, invoices, and customs declarations.
- Cost and risk management: Monitor and analyze shipping costs, tariffs, and market trends to identify opportunities for cost savings. Mitigate supply chain risks, such as delays, market fluctuations, and disruptions.
- Documentation and reporting: Maintain accurate records of all import activities and transactions. Prepare and present scheduled and ad-hoc reports on shipment movements, cost analysis, and departmental performance to management.
- Stakeholder coordination: Collaborate with various internal teams (production, finance, quality control) and external parties (customs authorities, logistics partners) to ensure a smooth and efficient import process.
Skills and qualifications
- Education: A bachelor's degree B.tech/ business administration, supply chain management, international trade, or a related field is typically required.
- Experience: Proven experience 6 to 10 years in import management, customs clearance, and logistics, preferably within the metals or manufacturing industry.
- Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of international trade regulations, customs procedures, tariff schedules, and the Harmonized System (HS) codes.
- Technical proficiency: Experience with import/export management software, enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP), and Microsoft Office.
- Soft skills: Strong negotiation, communication, and problem-solving skills, with excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
- Leadership: Ability to lead and manage a team, delegate tasks, and motivate staff to achieve departmental goals.
