Job Description

Head of Engineering – EV Motor / Driveline (Powertrain) Company


Roles & Responsibilities


1. Strategic Leadership

  • Define and execute the overall engineering strategy aligned with the company’s vision for EV motor development.
  • Drive innovation in motor technologies (PMSM, BLDC, Induction, Axial Flux, Hub Motors) to meet evolving market and regulatory demands.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership on long-term technology roadmap, including electrification, power electronics, and control systems.
  • Benchmark global competitors and adopt best practices to position the company as a leader in EV motor technology.


Research & Development

  • Lead R&D initiatives in advanced motor design, efficiency improvements, noise & vibration reduction, and thermal management.
  • Oversee development of prototypes, validation, and testing of motors to meet safety, reliability, and cost targets.
  • Electromagnetic Design Expertise

    – Hands-on experience with advanced simulation tools like

    JMAG, SPEED, and Motor-CAD

    for motor performance optimization.
  • Foster IP creation—patents, designs, and proprietary technologies to secure competitive advantage.


Product Engineering

  • Manage end-to-end product engineering lifecycle: concept, design, prototyping, testing, validation, and industrialization.
  • Ensure motor designs meet global standards (ISO, IEC, AIS, CE, UL, etc.) and regional homologation requirements.
  • Collaborate with power electronics, battery systems, and vehicle integration teams for seamless drivetrain performance.
  • Mechanical Design Knowledge

    – Apply design rules for motors, e-drives, and controllers to ensure durability, manufacturability, and performance.
  • Motor & Controller Topologies

    – Strong familiarity with architectures (PMSM, BLDC, SRM, Axial Flux) and their control strategies (FOC, DTC, sensorless control).
  • Implement Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Reliability (DFR), and cost-optimization practices.


Testing, Validation & Certification

  • Oversee rigorous testing protocols: durability, thermal cycling, EMI/EMC, high-voltage safety, and reliability.
  • Product Testing & Certification

    – Manage EV motor and controller validation, homologation, and compliance with domestic and global regulatory standards.
  • Drive certification processes for new product launches in Indian and export markets.


Operations & Manufacturing Support

  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure scalability, quality, and efficiency in production processes.
  • Process Design & Manufacturing

    – Deep understanding of motor manufacturing processes (winding, lamination, casting, assembly, rotor balancing, etc.) and design guidelines.
  • Drive supplier development, localization of critical components, and cost competitiveness.
  • Support automation, robotics, and precision assembly techniques for high-volume production.


People Leadership

  • Build, mentor, and lead a multi-disciplinary engineering team (mechanical, electrical, electronics, thermal, materials, and software engineers).
  • Establish a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Groom next-level leaders within engineering to ensure strong succession planning.


Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Collaborate with OEM clients to translate their requirements into engineering solutions.
  • Act as the technical face of the company during customer discussions, technical reviews, and joint development programs.
  • Engage with external stakeholders like academia, industry consortia, and research institutes for partnerships.


Techno-Commercial & Business Alignment

  • Techno-Commercial Acumen

    – Align engineering designs with cost targets, product positioning, and business strategy.
  • Evaluate trade-offs between performance, cost, and time-to-market to support profitable growth.
  • Support business development with technical insights for client pitches and partnerships.


Candidate Requirements:

  • Experience:

    15–25 years in engineering/R&D, with at least 7–10 years leading teams in EV motors, e-drives, or automotive powertrain systems.
  • Technical Expertise:

    Strong knowledge of

    electromagnetic and mechanical design

    (JMAG, SPEED, Motor-CAD), motor/controller topologies (PMSM, BLDC, Induction, Axial Flux) and their control strategies.
  • Product Development:

    Proven track record of delivering

    end-to-end EV motor programs

    – from concept, prototyping, and validation to certification and mass production.
  • Manufacturing & Process Knowledge:

    Hands-on understanding of

    motor manufacturing processes

    , DFM/DFR practices, supplier development, and process optimization.
  • Techno-Commercial Acumen:

    Ability to balance

    cost, performance, and time-to-market

    while ensuring profitability and competitiveness.
  • Customer Orientation:

    Proven experience working with

    OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers

    , acting as the technical face of the organization and ensuring customer satisfaction.
  • Education:

    B.E./B.Tech in Electrical/Electronics/Mechanical Engineering;

    M.Tech / Ph.D. preferred
