Design Manager – Electrical (Utility-Scale Solar)

Role Description

This is a full-time on-site role for a Design Manager – Electrical (Utility-Scale Solar) located in Pune. The Design Manager will be responsible for overseeing the electrical design and engineering aspects of utility-scale solar projects. This includes developing design strategies, managing project timelines, ensuring compliance with regulations, and collaborating with internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead electrical design for utility-scale solar PV projects from concept to execution.
• Prepare and review DC & AC single-line diagrams, layouts, and detailed electrical drawings.
• Carry out PVsyst simulations for energy yield, CUF optimization, and loss analysis.
• Design substation and switchyard systems (11 kV / 33 kV / 66 kV / 132 kV / 220 kV) including bus schemes, line bays, transformer bays, and bus coupler bays.
• Engineer transmission line systems including routing, tower design, conductor selection, and compliance with CEA/IS standards.
• Develop detailed equipment specifications and review vendor Guaranteed Technical Particulars (GTPs) for transformers, switchgear, breakers, CT/PT, isolators, surge arresters, relays, and cables.
• Conduct load flow, short-circuit, harmonic, and protection coordination studies to ensure reliable and safe operation.
• Design auxiliary power systems (AC/DC supply, battery banks, chargers) and control & protection systems.
• Ensure integration of SCADA, metering, and communication systems with the plant and grid.
• Support procurement teams with technical evaluations and vendor clarifications.
• Coordinate with DISCOM/STU/CTU for grid connectivity, compliance, and statutory approvals.
• Provide technical guidance during FAT, SAT, and pre-dispatch inspections of major electrical equipment.
• Ensure designs comply with IS/IEC standards, CEA guidelines, and project-specific requirements.
• Lead and mentor the electrical design team while coordinating with civil, mechanical, and automation teams.
• Maintain documentation, revision control, and as-built records of design deliverables.

Qualifications & Skills

• Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 8–10 years of experience in utility-scale solar PV design (substation, switchyard, and transmission line exposure is essential).
• Proficiency in PVsyst, AutoCAD, ETAP/DIgSILENT, and MS Office tools.
• Strong knowledge of IEC/IS/CEA standards and grid codes.
• Excellent leadership, coordination, and communication skills.
