Job Description

Breakthrough is looking for a Deputy Director to head its Media, Content and Digital portfolio. The Media Head will lead the organisation’s strategic media and content efforts to challenge and reshape narratives around gender, specifically gender norms. This includes overseeing and strategically informing development of all media content- digital and creative aligned with our behaviour change goals. The candidate will work at the intersection of gender politics, pop culture, and digital storytelling, managing a team and collaborating across functions to deliver high-impact narratives and interventions.


This role will report to the Chief Strategic Partnerships and Communications officer (CPCO) and will be part of the Senior Leadership Team.


Key Responsibilities:


Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement an integrated media strategy aligned with the organization's vision
  • Identify opportunities to leverage digital, traditional, and pop culture media to challenge dominant narratives
  • Lead the creation and roll-out of multi-platform behaviour change communication (BCC) campaigns.
  • Provide leadership and direction to media, design, content teams, digital youth engagement strategy.
  • As part of the Senior Leadership Team, contribute strategically to the organisations processes, outcomes, strategy and culture


Content & Communication

  • Oversee development of compelling, inclusive, and evidence-based content—films, social media series, podcasts, influencer campaigns, and more.
  • Ensure all messaging reflects a strong gender lens and is intersectional
  • Work closely with internal teams to translate insights into creative communication.


Digital & Pop Culture Engagement

  • Use pop culture, trends, and digital platforms to engage diverse audiences—especially youth—on gender issues.
  • Build partnerships with creators, influencers, platforms, and media houses to amplify content.



Management & Collaboration

  • Manage cross-functional creative teams including writers, designers, filmmakers, digital strategists, and consultants.
  • Oversee budgets, timelines and deliver on programs as per committed timelines
  • Represent the media function in leadership meetings, strategy sessions, and external forums.


Specific Knowledge, Skill & Experience Required:


  • Proven experience in media, communications, or content leadership in a gender, human rights or social change context.
  • Deep understanding of gender politics, feminist frameworks, and how media shapes cultural norms.
  • Expertise in behaviour change communication and strategic storytelling including digital communication for impact.
  • Strong grasp of pop culture, audience insights, and digital media ecosystems in India/global South.
  • Excellent team leadership, project management, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience working with influencers, media partners, and creative agencies.
  • Comfort with content production tools, social media analytics, and storytelling formats across platforms.
  • 13-15 years of relevant experience


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Master’s degree in Media, Communications, Gender Studies, or related fields is Preferred;
  • Experience working in civil society, development sector, or social impact startups;
  • Strong portfolio of campaigns or content that have driven public engagement on social issues.
