The Medical Leader serves as the scientific and strategic expert for a specific Therapeutic Area (TA) or key product, ensuring alignment with business unit goals. This role provides strategic direction and scientific leadership within the Medical Affairs function, contributing to the overall success of the organization’s medical and business objectives.
The Medical Leader brings deep insight into healthcare system dynamics, including clinical practices, patient pathways, and treatment gaps, and translates these into actionable strategies within local Medical Plans. The role is accountable for developing and executing Therapy Area or Product Medical Affairs Plans—comprising confidence-building, evidence generation, and clinical practice transformation activities—to strengthen healthcare ecosystems, improve patient outcomes, and drive access to quality care.
The position also incorporates innovation into Medical Affairs strategies, leading initiatives that drive sustainable healthcare impact and support the adoption of evidence-based practices, treatment guidelines, and novel therapies.
Provide scientific and strategic direction within the assigned therapeutic area or product portfolio.
Maintain expertise in disease management, emerging therapies, and the competitive landscape.
Develop and implement the Therapy Area or Product Medical Affairs Plan, including evidence generation and practice-shaping activities.
Act as a subject matter expert for internal and external stakeholders, providing training, mentoring, and scientific guidance.
Integrate healthcare system insights (clinical pathways, patient journeys, access challenges) into actionable strategic plans.
Ensure alignment between the Field Medical Strategic Plan (FMSP) and overall Medical Affairs strategy.
Drive effective engagement through a balanced mix of traditional (e.g., healthcare professionals) and non-traditional (e.g., policy makers, patient groups, government, innovative solution providers) stakeholders.
Collaborate cross-functionally with commercial, market access, regulatory, and corporate affairs teams to ensure integrated medical and business strategies.
Lead or co-lead key cross-functional projects such as Real-World Evidence (RWE) programs, clinical trials, or market access initiatives.
Use digital tools, analytics, and dashboards to inform data-driven decision-making and enhance patient-centric solutions.
Regularly update stakeholders on medical plan progress, highlighting outcomes, variances, and impact on patients and the business.
Identify and drive scalable and sustainable healthcare initiatives that enable equitable access to quality care.
Engage in high-quality, peer-level scientific discussions with healthcare professionals and medical experts.
Identify and analyze healthcare gaps, generating insights that inform strategy, product development, and evidence needs.
Provide field intelligence and insights to guide internal medical and brand discussions.
Lead scientific education programs and develop clinical resources to facilitate adoption of new therapies into clinical practice.
Provide scientific review and approval of product materials, ensuring accuracy, balance, and compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
Support marketing and promotional initiatives with medical input, ensuring scientific integrity and ethical compliance.
Oversee the governance of medical activities, ensuring adherence to all relevant codes of practice, regulations, and company policies.
Medical degree (MBBS, MD, or equivalent) with specialization or experience in a relevant therapeutic area.
Extensive experience in Medical Affairs within the pharmaceutical or healthcare industry.
Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical environment, clinical research, and healthcare ecosystem.
Proven ability to engage and manage internal and external stakeholders effectively.
Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively across functions and influence at multiple levels.
Innovative and solution-oriented mindset focused on driving healthcare transformation.
Experience in clinical or basic research, drug development, and product lifecycle management.
Understanding of regulatory, pharmacovigilance, and medical information functions.
Exposure to digital health, data analytics, and technology-driven engagement models.
