Role Mission:

We are seeking a proactive and highly skilled Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team. The successful candidate will be a self-starter with the curiosity and drive to continually improve and optimize our database estate. With a primary focus on Microsoft SQL Server, you will be responsible for performance tuning, query optimization, and ensuring high availability. You will also support and expand our use of Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL as part of our broader data platform strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer, configure, and maintain SQL Server databases across production, staging, and development environments.
  • Perform query tuning, performance optimization, and execution plan analysis to ensure efficiency and scalability.
  • Design, implement, and manage SQL Server Always On Availability Groups for high availability and disaster recovery.
  • Automate database setup, configuration, and scheduled jobs to reduce manual effort and improve reliability.
  • Proactively identify and drive improvements in database performance, automation, and processes across the estate.
  • Monitor and maintain database health, including backups, indexing, statistics, and security controls.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, collaborating with developers, infrastructure, and DevOps teams.
  • Support the adoption and management of Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL environments.
  • Document database procedures, policies, and best practices, while championing continuous improvement.
  • Stay current with emerging database technologies and propose innovative solutions.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience as a SQL Server DBA in production environments.
  • Deep expertise in SQL query tuning, performance analysis, and optimization.
  • Strong hands-on experience with SQL Server Always On (Availability Groups).
  • Solid understanding of database security, backup, and disaster recovery strategies.
  • Experience with cloud-hosted and on-premises databases.
  • Skill in Cosmos DB and PostgreSQL (highly desired).
  • Strong background in automation (e.g., PowerShell, T-SQL, or other scripting).
  • Experience in automating database setup, deployments, and job scheduling.
  • A self-motivated problem-solver with strong analytical skills and the curiosity to challenge the status quo.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric and modern data lakehouse concepts.
  • Hands-on experience with Elasticsearch for indexing and search workloads.
  • Exposure to Azure Data Factory or other ETL/ELT orchestration tools.
  • Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD database deployment pipelines.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate).
