Job Title: Chief Chemist – Quality Control (Steel / Metals)
Location: Bahalgarh, Sonipat
Experience: 8‑9 years
Job Purpose
The Chief Chemist in the steel / metal industry is responsible for overseeing all chemical testing, quality control, and analytical laboratory functions to ensure that raw materials, in‑process, and finished products meet the required chemical, physical, and metallurgical specifications. The role involves leadership, process improvement, troubleshooting, compliance, and coordination across departments to maintain product integrity and regulatory / customer requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and manage the chemical / metallurgical QC laboratory: raw materials, slag, additives, in‑process samples, finished steel / metal products.
Develop, validate, and maintain analytical and testing methods. Ensure accuracy, precision, and reliability of test results.
Ensure regular calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments (e.g., spectrometers, gas analyzers, carbon & sulfur analyzers, wet chemistry setups).
Implement quality assurance procedures, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and work instructions. Maintain documentation.
Monitor incoming raw material quality to identify deviations / non‑conformance, collaborate with procurement / suppliers for corrective actions.
Coordinate with the production / process engineering teams to diagnose and correct quality issues, metallurgical problems, chemical composition deviations.
Conduct periodic audits of QC processes, ensure compliance with relevant standards / regulations (e.g., ISO, customer specs).
Maintain health, safety and environmental standards in the lab (chemical safety, waste handling).
Lead / mentor / train a team of chemists / lab technicians: assign tasks, evaluate performance, develop skills.
Manage inventory of reagents, reference standards, etc., ensure availability and valid certifications of standards.
Prepare reports and present findings to senior management: trends, root cause analyses, cost impacts from quality shortfalls.
Drive continuous improvement initiatives in lab efficiency, testing turnaround, cost reductions, and accuracy.
Qualifications / Skills
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering; Master’s preferred.
Experience: 8‑9 years in QC / analytical chemistry in steel / metals or heavy industry. Hands‑on experience with chemical & metallurgical testing.
Deep knowledge of analytical techniques / instrumentation relevant to steel: e.g. Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), ICP, wet chemistry methods, carbon/sulfur analyzers, spectrophotometry.
Good understanding of metallurgical processes, steel grades/specifications, importance of chemical composition, impurities.
Strong troubleshooting: identify sources of QC failures; interface with production / process to resolve.
Leadership & management skills: ability to lead a lab team, ensure discipline, training, quality culture.
Attention to detail, strong problem solving, analytical thinking.
Good communication skills, ability to prepare technical reports and present to management.
Familiarity with quality standards (ISO etc.), customer specifications, regulatory requirements.
Computer skills including lab data management, statistical tools (e.g., for QC charts, process capability).
Performance Indicators
Accuracy and reliability of lab test results (low error / deviation rate).
Lab turnaround time for QC analyses.
Number of non‑conformance incidents (raw material / finished product) attributed to chemical errors.
Cost of QC (consumables, re‑tests) vs budget.
Frequency of corrective actions and how effectively they are resolved.

Pay: ₹50,000.00 - ₹60,000.00 per month
