About The Role
The Build Specialist Service Desk is responsible for creating, managing, and distributing software packages while maintaining the systems and tools that ensure smooth service desk operations. The role involves collaborating closely with IT teams to optimize the IT environment for performance, reliability, automation, and end-user satisfaction.This position requires strong expertise in software packaging, deployment processes, device management, troubleshooting, and modern endpoint management technologies such as Microsoft Intune, MDM, and Windows ecosystem tools.
Key Responsibilities
- Software Packaging & Build Management :
- Package software applications using industry-standard tools and methods for deployment across various environments.
- Create distributable and reliable software builds for Windows, Android, and iOS devices.
- Maintain version control, documentation, and packaging best practices.
- Testing & Validation :
- Conduct functional and integration testing of software builds before deployment.
- Validate build stability and compatibility across multiple environments and platforms.
- Work with QA and service desk teams to ensure packaged applications meet operational requirements.
- Deployment & Release Management :
- Manage deployment of software packages through Microsoft Intune, MDM solutions, or other enterprise deployment tools.
- Execute deployments in on-premises, cloud, or hybrid environments.
- Coordinate release schedules, monitor deployment success, and perform rollback procedures when necessary.
- Updates, Patch Management & Build Maintenance :
- Maintain and update build systems, templates, and automation workflows.
- Ensure OS images, application builds, drivers, and configurations are consistently updated.
- Oversee patching and updates through tools such as Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).
- Troubleshooting & Issue Resolution :
- Identify, diagnose, and resolve build failures, deployment issues, package errors, and environment-related problems.
- Perform root cause analysis and recommend long-term solutions to enhance stability.
- Support service desk teams with escalated technical issues related to packaged software or deployments.
- Collaboration & Documentation :
- Work closely with service desk staff, infrastructure teams, MDM specialists, and application owners.
- Develop and maintain detailed documentation for builds, deployment processes, and configurations.
- Contribute to standard operating procedures (SOPs), knowledge base articles, and best practices.
Technical Skillset Required
Microsoft Intune Expertise :
- Ability to identify, package, deploy, and manage application updates via Intune.
- Experience architecting modern desktop/device management solutions using Windows 10/11, Android, and iOS.
MDM & Endpoint Management
- Experience with MDM solutions for device configuration, compliance, and software distribution.
SharePoint Management
- Hands-on experience in managing, configuring, and supporting SharePoint environments.
Networking & Infrastructure Knowledge
- Understanding of TCP/IP fundamentals, AD domains, Microsoft Windows networks, and server environments.
- Knowledge of Active Directory, Entra ID (Azure AD), Azure Virtual Desktop, and related cloud identity services.
Operating System & Hardware Support
- Experience installing operating systems, managing OS images, adding drivers for new hardware, and maintaining standard builds.
Application Packaging & Deployment Tools
- Deep understanding of packaging technologies, installation frameworks, and deployment automation.
Legacy & Modern Microsoft Technologies
- Proficiency in Group Policy, on-premise domain configurations, and other legacy Microsoft technologies.
- Familiarity with WSUS for patch management.
Qualifications
- Graduate or Postgraduate degree in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, or a related field.
- 4- 8 years of proven experience as a Build Specialist, Packaging Engineer, Desktop Engineer, or similar IT Infrastructure role.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with IT teams and end-users.
