Job Description
Purpose of the Role:
This position is responsible for overseeing all legal matters at plant locations and subsidiaries of Tata Motors. The role ensures end-to-end compliance with labour laws, Factories Act, health and safety laws, contract labour, and other industrial legislations in line with company policies, and supports the organization in mitigating legal risks and driving compliance excellence.
Job Responsibilities:
1. Legal Planning & Advisory
Provide legal advice on plant operations, contracts, environment & labour matters
Plan and ensure timely resolution of litigation
Monitor legal compliance and changes in legislation
KPIs: No. of litigation cases, Win/Loss ratio, DA issued, Sign-off of contracts, Timely reports submitted, Adherence to timelines
2. Audit, Compliance & Execution
Vet contracts, issue/reply notices
Track court cases (labour, civil, criminal, etc.)
Brief advocates, handle wage settlements, criminal prosecution, etc.
Secure and update all legal documentation
KPIs: Timely and accurate filings, Improved compliance rating, Reduction in risk areas
3. Risk Mitigation & Proactive Governance
Monitor summons/warrants and take proactive steps
Study claims and assess exposure
Lead de-risking projects to prevent penalties and violations
KPIs: Number of legal escalations avoided, % of resolved risks, Training programs delivered
4. Stakeholder Management & Coordination
Coordinate with internal functions (HR, P&SC, CPED, ERC, etc.)
Engage external stakeholders like local bodies, cooperative societies, police
Support Defense tenders and industrial licensing processes
5. KPIs: No. of successful collaborations, Reduction in litigation via early intervention, Stakeholder feedback/satisfaction
6. Legal Enablement & Awareness
Conduct quarterly legal awareness programs with HR/L&D
Train leadership on new legal requirements and updates
Collaborate on contract clause reviews, property rights, electricity law, etc.
KPIs: No. of trainings conducted, Employee legal awareness index, Quality of preventive interventions
7. Purchase Contracting Support
Partner with the Purchase & Supply Chain (P&SC) team to review and finalize key contracts and agreements such as:
• Goods Supply Agreements
• Tooling Agreements
• Strategic Vendor Contracts
• Rate Contracts and Work Orders
Ensure legal clauses in contracts protect the organization's interest (e.g., indemnity, liability, arbitration, IP ownership, termination clauses).
Support vendor negotiations from a legal standpoint, including risk mitigation and recovery strategies.
Conduct legal vetting of tendering documents, procurement contracts, and change orders to ensure compliance and minimal risk exposure.
Enable strategic litigations where required, including matters related to supplier recovery or dispute resolution.
Desired Candidate Profile
Education:
LLB (Mandatory)
LLM (Preferred)
Experience:
Minimum 20 years of post-qualification legal experience, preferably in automobile/manufacturing sectors
Skills & Competencies:
Deep expertise in Indian industrial, labour, contract, factory and environmental laws
Strategic legal advisory with commercial acumen
Litigation management and compliance tracking
Proactive risk mitigation and stakeholder influencing
Team development and mentoring
