Job Description

Company Description

The Whiskey Library is a fast-growing, bootstrapped DTC brand built on Shopify. We help whiskey lovers discover unique bottles and experiences through subscription and ecommerce. As a Whiskey Library team member, you’ll join a lean, high-ownership group building custom tools and apps that power our customer journey—from onboarding to subscription management to fulfillment.

You’ll be joining at an exciting stage: we’re extending Shopify with apps that manage customer preferences, subscriptions, referrals, and operational automation. As part of a small, focused team, you’ll have the opportunity to own the codebase, work directly with the founder (project lead), and collaborate closely with our designer to ship features that matter.

Compensation Range (Contract-to-Hire):

paid trial (2–4 weeks)

What’s the role?

Full-Stack Developer

We need someone who thrives in a small-team environment, can manage a codebase independently, and consistently ships on time within two-week sprints. You’ll work directly with the founder (project lead) and a UI/UX designer to bring ideas from concept to production.

paid trial (2–4 weeks)

What’s this team like at The Whiskey Library?

We’re small, focused, and collaborative. You’ll join a team where:

  • The

    founder

is your manager and project lead.
  • A

    UI/UX designer

    delivers specs for pixel-perfect implementation.
  • You’ll be the

    primary owner of the codebase

—from backend services to frontend builds to integrations.
  • We work in

    two-week sprints

, favor lean design docs, and measure success by what we ship and how reliably we ship it.

We value autonomy, reliability, and clear communication. If you like solving problems end-to-end, owning your work, and seeing direct business impact, you’ll fit right in.

What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Build across the stack: React/Next.js frontends, Node.js backends, SQL data models, Shopify APIs.
  • Implement customer-facing onboarding flows and subscription self-serve features.
  • Extend referral/credit functionality and surface balances at checkout/account.
  • Integrate with fulfillment provider APIs to streamline order tagging and packing.
  • Incorporate

    AI features

(LLMs, personalization models, recommendation logic) into the customer journey.
  • Maintain CI/CD pipelines, write tests, and set up error monitoring.
  • Collaborate directly with founder and designer in sprint planning, demos, and retros.
  • Keep short design docs and runbooks updated for reliability and clarity.
Qualifications
  • Proven industry experience

(3+ years) as a full-stack or product engineer.
  • Track record of

    shipping end-to-end projects

    (especially backend-heavy).
  • Strong skills in

Node.js (or Python), React/Next.js, and SQL

    .
  • Experience with

    Shopify APIs

(Admin GraphQL/REST, Storefront API, webhooks, metafields) or the ability to learn them quickly.
  • Experience integrating with

    third-party APIs

and handling failures gracefully (retries, backoff, monitoring).
  • Ability to explain technical projects clearly, including architecture and tradeoffs.
  • Comfort managing a

    codebase independently

with accountability for quality and reliability.
  • Familiarity with

    AI integration

(working with LLMs, APIs, or recommendation engines).
  • Strong communicator: reliable in daily updates, proactive about risks, and collaborative with non-technical teammates.

Nice-to-have

  • Subscriptions, referral/credit, or personalization systems.
  • Shopify Checkout/Customer Account Extensions.
  • CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and serverless deployments (Vercel/AWS/GCP).
Application Process
  1. Application

    — share your resume/LinkedIn and a short note on

    why you’re a good fit

    for a small, fast-moving team.
  2. Project examples

    — include links to

    2–3 shipped projects

    , especially backend-heavy ones.
  3. Loom explainer (≤5 min)

    — choose one project and walk us through:
  • What it did
  • Your role and responsibilities
  • Tech stack + architecture
  • Tradeoffs you made
  1. Interview

    — meet with the founder to discuss your approach, working style, and fit.
  2. Paid trial (2–4 weeks)

    — scoped milestone: onboarding step + admin view + one pixel-perfect section + CI/tests/monitoring + short design doc.
  3. Long-term engagement

    — contract-to-hire with monthly base +

bonuses tied to performance and on-time delivery

    .
