Position Summary

Head of Department (Mechanical Engineering)

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership & Strategy

• Define and execute the mechanical engineering roadmap aligned with defence program needs.
• Build, mentor, and lead a multi-disciplinary mechanical design team with focus on innovation and excellence.
• Establish best practices in mechanical engineering (DFMA, DTC, ruggedization, reliability).

• Design & Development

• Oversee the mechanical packaging design of avionics displays and other defence products.
• Ensure structural and thermal integrity through advanced analysis (FEA, CFD, vibration, shock).
• Drive EMI/EMC management aspects related to mechanical packaging.
• Approve critical designs, review trade-offs, and guide design modifications.

• Program Management & Execution

• Lead design reviews, requirement analysis, and verification planning.
• Coordinate with electrical, electronics, optics, and systems teams for integrated solutions.
• Manage outsourced design/fabrication partners and vendor development (CNC, sheet metal, injection moulding, die-casting, coatings).
• Ensure timely delivery of prototypes, fixtures, and qualification models.

• Standards & Compliance

• Ensure design compliance with MIL-STD, DO-160, JSS-55555, ASTM, and aerospace design standards.
• Guide environmental testing (vibration, thermal cycling, humidity, IP67 compliance).
• Liaise with regulatory and certification bodies (CEMILAC, DGAQA, DRDO).

• Innovation & Value Engineering

• Introduce new materials, thermal solutions, and manufacturing techniques.
• Lead value engineering and obsolescence management for mechanical systems.

Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor’s/Master’s in Mechanical Engineering from a reputed institute.
• 12-15years of experience, with at least 5–7 years in leadership roles in defence/aerospace product design.
• Proven track record in avionics packaging, structural/thermal design, and defence-grade system qualification.
• Expertise in CAD/CAE tools (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, CATIA, Creo, ANSYS, Flowtherm, Nastran).
• Strong knowledge of mechanical processes: machining, casting, molding, welding, coatings.
• Experience in managing cross-functional defence projects from concept to production.
