Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain IBM i applications using CA 2E (Synon): define entities/relations, access paths, function types (Display/Edit/Browse/Print/Batch/Subfile), and action diagrams
  • Generate and compile Synon objects (COBOL/CL), manage model values/standards, and promote consistently across environments
  • Build and tune Db2 for iseries database objects and access paths; manage referential integrity, journaling, and commitment control
  • Execute full SDLC: requirements, estimation, technical design, unit/integration testing, code reviews, and deployments via change-management tools
  • Collaborate with BAs, QA, and stakeholders in Agile ceremonies
  • Use AI tools to accelerate work: generate/refactor action diagrams and code snippets, analyze logs/SQL plans, draft tests and documentation-validating outputs and following privacy/compliance guidelines
  • Optional domain: support pharmacy claims/RxCLAIM interfaces, extracts, and operational workflows
  • Comply with the terms and conditions of the employment contract, company policies and procedures, and any and all directives (such as, but not limited to, transfer and/or re-assignment to different work locations, change in teams and/or work shifts, policies in regard to flexibility of work benefits and/or work environment, alternative work arrangements, and other decisions that may arise due to the changing business environment). The Company may adopt, vary or rescind these policies and directives in its absolute discretion and without any limitation (implied or otherwise) on its ability to do so

Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of professional IBM i development experience with solid skills in COBOL, ILE concepts (binding, service programs), CLLE, and SQL for Db2 for iseries
  • Experience with batch processing and schedulers (Advanced Job Scheduler, Robot/SCHEDULE, or similar) and with source/change management (TurnOver, Aldon, ARCAD, Implementer, or Git-based workflows)
  • Proficiency with IBM i tools: RDi and/or ACS (Run SQL Scripts, SQL Services), STRSQL, STRDBG/service entry points, job/message queues, IFS; familiarity with PDM/SEU is a plus
  • Solid debugging, performance tuning (indexes, Visual Explain), error handling, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of security and compliance practices on IBM i (object authority, adopted authority, auditing) and working within HIPAA-compliant environments
  • AI fluency: hands-on use of AI-assisted development and support tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot/CodeWhisperer and chat-based assistants) to improve productivity; skill in prompt creation, validating AI outputs, and applying privacy/compliance best practices when using AI
  • Domain plus: RxCLAIM experience preferred; understanding of PBM/pharmacy claims concepts (NCPDP D.0, eligibility, accumulators, pricing) and related EDI standards (270/271, 834, 835)
  • Solid communication skills and ability to work effectively in cross-functional, Agile or hybrid teams; self-driven with attention to detail
At UnitedHealth Group, our mission is to help people live healthier lives and make the health system work better for everyone. We believe everyone - of every race, gender, sexuality, age, location and income - deserves the opportunity to live their healthiest life. Today, however, there are still far too many barriers to good health which are disproportionately experienced by people of color, historically marginalized groups and those with lower incomes. We are committed to mitigating our impact on the environment and enabling and delivering equitable care that addresses health disparities and improves health outcomes - an enterprise priority reflected in our mission.
