Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Our mission is to build the data platform for the age of AI, powering a new class of data-first applications and driving a data culture.

Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.
We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join the Azure PostgreSQL team, where you will be working as Postgres performance SME. In this role you will have opportunity to work with some of the top customers of Azure PostgreSQL and help solve complex database performance issues.

Responsibilities

  • You work closely with our customers to understand their challenges, solve issues during critical escalations, and teach best practices
  • You, acting as the “voice of the customer”, bring learnings to the engineering process to design new features. By shaping the direction of the Azure Postgres products, you make it easier to understand how our service is used by customers, including database developers and administrators
  • You are viewed as the ultimate subject matter expertise for all things databases as your work will be highly sought by the development team, the support team, the account team and customers directly
  • You will interact with the open-source community via forums and conferences
  • Embody our culture and values

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline
  • 8 years’ experience building and maintaining complex mission-critical production Database systems such as Postgres and Oracle
  • 5 years’ experience designing and maintaining PostgreSQL relational databases
  • 5 years’ experience in systems engineering, including database performance tuning, memory management, I/O tuning, configuration, security, networking, clusters and troubleshooting
  • 5 years’ experience working directly with customers, resolving database/ performance related issues and providing systems/ database architecture leadership
  • Awareness of customer workloads and use cases, including performance, availability and scalability
  • Working knowledge of relational database internals (locking, consistency, serialization, recovery paths)
  • Working knowledge of at least one scripting language (shell, Python, Perl)
Preferred/Additional Qualifications
  • Experience working with customers and diverse workloads and is a subject matter expert in database management and performance
  • Subject matter expert in performance tuning
  • Software consulting experience
  • Working knowledge of at least one application programming language (Python, Java, C#, C, C++, Go)
  • Coding skills in the procedural language for at least one database engine a must (PL/SQL, PL/Pg SQL, T-SQL etc.)

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:
  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
