We are currently seeking a
Senior Community Relation Officer
to join our team, permanent full-time position at our Simberi Operation. Your work location is Papua New Guinea, working a 15/13 Roster from Kavieng, Rabaul, Port Moresby, Lae, Mt Hagen, Buka, Madang, Goroka, Alotau, Wapenamanda, Popondetta, Hoskins, Wewak, Vanimo & the Tabar group of Islands.

Reporting to the Exploration Manager, the purpose of this role is to support the company’s exploration activities through maintaining good community relations in a manner consistent with the Company’s Vision, business strategy, values, policies and compliance obligations.
The opportunity
Technical Accountabilities
- Ensuring own Health & Safety as well as that of all other workers, identifying and maintaining safe work practices and completing all required safety training.
- Producing high quality community relations outputs (e.g. monthly reports, specific reports, landowner access agreements, genealogy and social mapping reports, exploration work program impact reports, water catchment reports, landowner compensations claims) consistent with the requirements of the business plan and with the designated project plans.
- Ensuring the effective co-ordination, organisation and management of the Exploration Community Relations team to facilitate land access within the Simberi Mine Lease (ML136) and EL 609 (Simberi, Tatau and Big Tabar Islands) in order that Exploration programs are undertaken in a timely manner.
- Ensuring the effective use of systems, processes, procedures and plan programs that promote good will and foster relationships with community leaders, local stakeholders and villagers within the Simberi Mine Lease (ML136) and (EL 609) covering Simberi, Tatau and Big Tabar Islands.
- Ensuring the effective direction and supervision of the Exploration department’s obligations to the community and other stakeholders including the government and that exploration work programs are carried out without interference.
- Ensuring statutory compliance is met and maintained in accordance with the Mining Act and Regulations. Communicating this compliance and related exploration operational matters to the community and government.
- Collecting, managing, and interpreting reliable community relations data and using the data to produce and maintain the required reports and related products.
- Contributing to ensuring the exploration function has a well-developed pipeline of prospects unimpeded by community relations related issues.
- Providing timely, accurate and relevant reporting to the Executive General Manager - Simberi Projects, and other internal and external parties as appropriate.
- Contributing productively as a member of the Simberi Exploration Leadership Team.
Scheduling Accountabilities
- Contributing to developing, implementing and reporting against Papua New Guinea exploration business and project plans that derive from and support the Company-wide Exploration Division strategy and plans.
People Accountabilities
- Contributing to building, developing and leading an effective and increasingly capable Simberi Community Relations team to support Exploration.
- Ensuring the work performance of self and direct reports meets all role and business plan requirements.
- Maintaining good relations with the communities within which we work

Essential
- Behaviour consistent with St Barbara’s Values
- A Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Communication for Development, or equivalent
- Ten years’ experience in a similar role, which will ideally have included negotiation with indigenous landowners
- Familiar with a variety of the field’s concepts, practices and procedures
- Conversant with the mining and environmental acts and statutory requirements (an understanding of the Labour Laws would be an advantage)
- Demonstrate a willingness to explore and embrace different cultures
- Have leadership attributes
- People oriented person
- Excellent communication skills
Desirable
- Principles and practices of demographic research and analysis; statistics and mathematics applicable to economic analysis
- Well-developed industry networks
