In this position, you will lead and develop innovative water resource management initiatives that align with TNC-India’s mission, integrating technical expertise in freshwater conservation, river rejuvenation and watershed restoration with program development and advocacy. The role emphasizes building strategic partnerships with governmental, private, and community stakeholders, promoting nature-based solutions, and advancing sustainable water management through policy advocacy and capacity building. You will oversee project implementation and monitoring, deliver training, represent TNC in international forums, and contribute to knowledge-sharing platforms, all while identifying funding opportunities and supporting the organization’s global water conservation objectives.

Roles and responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership and Program Development:
  • Drive and oversee innovative water resource management projects that directly support TNC’s mission and global objectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate water management strategies into larger conservation efforts, including biodiversity protection, climate resilience, and sustainable community development.
  • Design and execute approaches that champion equitable, sustainable water use, promote ecosystem restoration, and enhance watershed health.
Technical Expertise and Advisory:
  • Offer expert guidance on watershed management, freshwater conservation, and ecological restoration initiatives around wetlands and other water bodies.
  • Champion and implement nature-based strategies to tackle issues such as drought, flooding, and water scarcity.
  • Advance integrated water resource management solutions that harmonize environmental, economic, and community interests.
Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships:
  • Establish and foster strategic partnerships with governments, industry leaders, community organizations, and donors to advance shared water stewardship goals.
  • Lead and facilitate multi-stakeholder dialogues that drive the adoption of best practices in freshwater conservation and policy development.
  • Represent TNC at national, regional, and global platforms to advocate for sustainable water management, exchange expertise, and highlight the organization’s achievements and initiatives.
Capacity Building and Knowledge Sharing:
  • Design and deliver training sessions and capacity-building workshops tailored for internal teams, partners, and local communities.
  • Raise awareness and deepen understanding of freshwater conservation and the benefits of nature-based solutions.
  • Contribute to TNC’s global knowledge-sharing platforms by sharing case studies, best practices, and innovative approaches.
Project Implementation and Monitoring:
  • Develop and execute integrated water resource projects, such as watershed conservation strategies, establishment of water funds, and ecosystem-based adaptation initiatives.
  • Create robust monitoring systems to evaluate both ecological and social outcomes of water-related interventions.
  • Provide consistent progress updates, including comprehensive financial tracking and in-depth technical assessments.
Policy Advocacy and Fundraising:
  • Champion advocacy efforts for policies that advance water conservation, promote equitable water governance, and enhance climate resilience.
  • Identify and secure funding opportunities from governmental agencies, multilateral organizations, and private sector partners to bolster TNC’s water initiatives.
  • Develop compelling proposals and comprehensive donor reports that align with TNC’s strategic conservation goals.

Deliverables (examples)

  • Detailed freshwater management strategies, river restoration action plans
  • Partnership agreements and collaborative frameworks for water conservation initiatives.
  • Technical reports on project implementation and impacts.
  • Contributions to briefing notes, policy recommendations relating to program outcomes.
  • Representing NCIS at regional/ global conferences and participating in TNC’s global events

What You’ll Bring:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Water Resources Management, Hydrology, Environmental Science, with Water Resource Management as a specialization with a minimum of 10 years of experience.
  • Proficiency in hydrological modelling, GIS, and watershed management tools.
  • Knowledge of nature-based solutions, watershed management, river restoration practices, hydrology, ecosystem-based adaptation etc. required.
  • Preference for those with previous experience working in NGOs, government agencies, and other similar research/development organizations.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage large-scale, multi-stakeholder conservation projects.
  • Strong communication skills in English (both written and spoken).
  • Experience in handling complex projects, strong leadership, and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills, including ability to present complex ideas to diverse audiences.

Desired Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in in Water Resources Management, Hydrology, Environmental Science, with Water Resource Management or a minimum of 12-15 years of experience in freshwater conservation, water resource management in freshwater ecosystems, river restoration or related fields
  • Team management experience with strong networks in freshwater conservation.
  • On-ground implementation expertise.
  • Strategic thinking and advanced analytical abilities

Reporting and Supervision: The Program Lead, Freshwater Resources is a senior-level position within NCIS. S/he will directly report to Director of Programs and work closely with TNC’s conservation teams, external partners, and stakeholders.
