Overall Purpose of the Role:

To serve as the marine resource within the Fleet Cell, ensuring vessels operate to the highest safety standards and comply with company and regulatory requirements. The role supports overall fleet operations with a strong focus on safety, compliance, and quality management.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor shipboard drug and alcohol testing.
  • Participate in office review for safety-critical work requiring approval.
  • Ensure safe and effective commercial operations of assigned vessels.
  • Plan and monitor internal and external audits.
  • Authorize selection and appraisals of Senior Officers.
  • Assist the DPA and act as DPA when required.
  • Foster strong working relationships with senior ship staff to build a strong onboard safety culture.
  • Collaborate with the fleet cell to improve office and customer KPIs.
  • Collect and analyze HSEQ data for assigned vessels.
  • Monitor health, environmental, and quality aspects on vessels.
  • Oversee cargo activities and ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Prepare vessel visitation plans and ensure follow-through.
  • Promptly report safety or operational issues to the Fleet Manager or Management.
  • Ensure the Crew Management System (CFM) is effectively used and improved.
  • Participate in risk assessment and control for shipboard operations.
  • Maintain records of incidents, non-conformances, and follow up on investigations and corrective actions.
  • Act as Company Security Officer (CSO) and plan ISPS audits.
  • Prepare vessels for inspections by PSC, Flag, Oil Majors, CDI, etc.
  • Attend and contribute to contingency drills and exercises.
  • Conduct monthly safety audits on vessels (if in Mumbai); report findings.
  • Perform sailing visits every 6 months for bridge team efficiency checks.
  • Maintain valid certification records (physical and electronic).
  • Ensure monthly safety meetings, training, and drills are recorded and photographed.
  • Monitor turnaround times and report voyage speeds and loading rates.
  • Implement and audit the Safety Management System (SMS) onboard quarterly.
  • Train crew in the use of the CFM system.
  • Approve Deck Officers and complete appraisals for top 2 deck officers.
  • Inspect safety gear and maintenance of LSA/FFA equipment monthly.
  • Ensure proper ISPS implementation and accommodation housekeeping.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience Required:

Essential:

  • Class 2 Certificate of Competency (1st Mate) with seagoing experience as Chief Officer (STCW-compliant).
  • Minimum 3 years as a senior shipboard officer and 5 years of experience with the relevant ship type,
  • OR

  • Equivalent formal education with 3+ years of senior-level experience in ship management operations.

  • OR

  • Tertiary qualification in management, engineering, or physical sciences with relevant practical experience.

Desirable:

  • Class 1 Master’s Certificate of Competency with command experience.
  • 2 years as a senior shipboard officer on a similar vessel type.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Planning, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work across all levels.
