Lead Shopify Engineer

Remote, Full-Time, Long-Term ContractWe’re looking for a Lead Shopify Engineer to guide our e-commerce development projects and ensure we deliver high-quality, performant online experiences. You’ll combine hands-on coding with leadership, mentoring, and technical decision-making, helping the team get the most out of the Shopify platform.
Role Overview
You’ll be the primary technical point of contact for Shopify projects, collaborating with designers, developers, and product managers to create engaging, scalable storefronts. This role blends implementation with architectural oversight, ensuring solutions meet both business and technical goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and deployment of Shopify-based storefronts
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical execution with client needs
- Act as the primary Shopify expert, providing guidance on platform capabilities and custom app development
- Build and implement Shopify themes using Liquid, HTML, CSS/SCSS, and JavaScript.
- Customize and extend Shopify’s Online Store 2.0 features (sections, blocks, metafields).
- Integrate third-party apps and APIs, ensuring performance and maintainability.
- Write clean, reusable, well-tested code with a focus on performance and maintainability
- Optimize for Core Web Vitals, accessibility, and SEO best practices
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to architectural discussions around state management, caching, and deployment
- Work across the stack, integrating 3rd party APIs and custom backend services
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in a collaborative, team-based environment
- Use AI to accelerate product development including use for code writing, code review, problem solving, and driving general efficiency and quality of development.
- Stay up to date with Shopify platform updates and e-commerce trends.
Required Skills & Experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, ability to work in distributed teams
- 5+ years of front-end development experience, including 3+ years in a senior or lead role
- Portfolio of a live website examples
- Deep expertise in Shopify theme development, including:
○ Customizing and building Shopify themes using Liquid, HTML, SCSS/CSS, and JavaScript
○ Working with Shopify's Online Store 2.0 framework and theme architecture (sections, blocks, metafields)○ Strong understanding of the Shopify admin, storefront, and checkoutcustomization capabilities○ Familiarity with Shopify CLI, Git-based theme deployment, and development workflows○ Experience integrating third-party apps and custom scripts into Shopify stores ○ Solid understanding of Shopify’s limitations and best practices for performance, accessibility, and SEO○ Working knowledge of Shopify APIs (Storefront API, Admin API) and webhook integrations
- Experience with GraphQL and RESTful APIs, as well as basic asynchronous JavaScript (fetch/AJAX)
- Proficiency with utility-first CSS frameworks like TailwindCSS (optional but nice to have)
- Familiarity with common front-end tooling (e.g., Webpack, Vite, or esbuild)
Advanced Technical Knowledge
- Experience with Shopify Plus features like Shopify Scripts, checkout.liquid, or Flow
- Experience working closely with designers to translate Figma/Sketch files into pixel-perfect themes
- Understanding of accessibility best practices (WCAG) for e-commerce Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with analytics tools (Google Analytics, GTM)
- Experience with composable commerce architecture
- Exposure to other e-commerce platforms (Magento, BigCommerce, SFCC)
