An OpenStack Engineer is a SME level cloud infrastructure specialist responsible for designing, deploying, managing, and troubleshooting complex OpenStack cloud environments. Their role involves deep expertise in OpenStack components, virtualization technologies, and cloud infrastructure automation, ensuring high availability, performance, and security of private or public clouds. Key Responsibilities: Infrastructure Management Monitor and maintain OpenStack infrastructure including bare metal servers, virtual machines (VMs), and container environments. Assist in provisioning and managing compute resources using OpenStack Nova for virtual machines and bare metal provisioning tools. Support storage management using OpenStack Cinder (block storage), Swift (object storage), and Glance (image service). Maintain networking services with OpenStack Neutron, ensuring proper network connectivity and security. Experience in implementation and maintenance on Apache Tomcat, MySQL and JBoss web service environment OpenStack Component Operations Perform day-to-day administration and health checks of OpenStack core services: Nova: Manage compute instances lifecycle. Neutron: Oversee virtual networking, including subnets, routers, and security groups. Cinder: Handle block storage volumes attachment and detachment. Glance: Manage VM images and snapshots. Swift: Monitor object storage availability and performance. Horizon: Support users with the OpenStack dashboard interface. Ceilometer: Collect and report telemetry and usage data for monitoring. Heat: Assist in orchestration tasks for automated cloud resource deployment. Monitoring and Troubleshooting Monitor cloud infrastructure performance and resource utilization using OpenStack telemetry (Ceilometer). Identify and escalate issues related to compute, storage, or network failures. Provide Tier 1 support by resolving basic incidents and service requests. Collaborate with senior engineers to troubleshoot complex problems and implement fixes. Automation and Scripting Support Assist in developing and maintaining automation scripts for routine cloud management tasks. Support configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef for deployment consistency. Basic understanding of cloud software deployments, with a focus on continuous integration and deployment using GitHub, Jenkins, and Maven Basic knowledge in object Python and C++ object oriented programming (OOP) concepts Help automate provisioning and scaling of resources, including containers and virtual machines. Incident & Problem Management Log and track incidents and service requests using ITSM tools, ensuring timely resolution and communication with stakeholders Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions to contribute to the knowledge base. Participate in root cause analysis for recurring incidents, providing input to senior engineers Change and Configuration Management Follow established change management procedures for implementing approved changes to server configurations, ensuring minimal disruption to services. Document all configuration changes and updates accurately for compliance and audit purposes.
