Job Title: Lead Design Engineer – Substation Secondary Design Experience: 3–8 Years Location: Chennai No. of Positions: 4 Industry: Electrical Engineering / EPC / Power Transmission Employment Type: Full-Time Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled and experienced Lead Design Engineer – Substation Secondary Design to join our growing team in Chennai. The ideal candidate will have solid hands-on experience in substation engineering for both AIS (Air-Insulated Substation) and GIS (Gas-Insulated Substation), with a strong focus on secondary system design and engineering for high voltage substations. The candidate will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team and supporting EPC projects from scoping to commissioning. Key Responsibilities: Lead the detailed engineering design for substation secondary systems (AIS & GIS). Drive engineering activities for EPC substation projects , from Scoping (ITO) to Execution & Commissioning (OTR) . Supervise and mentor a team of 10+ design and drafting professionals. Coordinate with cross-functional teams including civil, mechanical, and protection engineers. Manage customer interactions to resolve design queries and technical issues. Develop and review engineering documents such as: Single Line Diagrams (SLD) Control & Protection Schemes Equipment Layouts Cable Schedules Earthing & Lightning Protection Layouts Cable Tray, Lighting, Fire Detection Layouts , etc. Prepare and review technical documents: Engineering Specifications Data Sheets Material & Purchase Requisitions Vendor Technical Bid Evaluations Select and size electrical components: HT/LT switchgears, transformers, breakers, isolators, cables, batteries, chargers, capacitors, etc. Ensure adherence to international standards: IEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA , etc. Support in 3D substation layout modeling, cable routing, and coordination drawings. Provide technical assistance during site construction and commissioning phases. Must-Have Skills & Competencies: Proven experience in AIS & GIS substation design and engineering. Experience managing EPC projects across all phases. Strong team leadership and stakeholder management. Experience in equipment sizing and selection. Expertise in preparing engineering drawings and specifications. Familiarity with substation layouts, control building design, and trench/cable management. Strong knowledge of protection systems, SCADA integration, and auxiliary power systems. Hands-on experience with AutoCAD and relevant electrical design tools. Excellent communication skills – verbal and written. Good-to-Have: Experience with substations above 220 kV . Experience working with utilities and major EPC contractors . Familiarity with Bluebeam , 3D modeling tools. Exposure to Building Management Systems (BMS) – HVAC, Fire Protection, CCTV, Security. Experience with international or multi-location project delivery.
