What You'll Do
As a Director of Engineering, you will bring strategic vision and leadership to guide the development of innovative, market-leading technology. What Your Responsibilities Will Be

- Automation vs People Power: Computers are great for process automation but there is a limit to what it can do, and you know where that limit is. You will tackle the unique challenges that occur at the intersection of software and people driven tasks and apply these solutions to the novel business automation that Avalara aims to create.
- Industry Leadership: Avalara is the market leader, and we intend on staying that way. That means we cannot be complacent. We encourage everyone to make bold moves and keep testing their limits. You will innovate and produce ideas to make things better.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align integration efforts with product and business goals.
- Lead, mentor, and inspire multiple teams, providing guidance on best practices, architecture, and development methodologies.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability within the engineering teams.
- Improve design of high-quality, scalable, and maintainable integration solutions.
- Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, deployment, and post-release support.
- Focus on security aspects, observability, scalability, and telemetry.
- Implement agile/scrum processes.
- Drive organizational change aligned with product and engineering roadmaps
- Lead teams utilizing modern technologies and processes
- Leverage industry trends and emerging tech to stay ahead of the curve
- Recruit and develop top-tier engineering talent
What You’ll Need To Be Successful
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent
- Requires 15+ years of software development experience and at least 8 years of leadership experience.
- Leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- An ability to navigate complex technical challenges.
- Experience working on multiple cloud technologies
- Thorough analytical skill to be able to solve complex problems and critical production issues.
- Experience delivering high-quality software projects.
- Familiarity with multiple authentication, authorization protocols, and application/Infra Security
- Good experience with RESTful APIs, JSON, XML, and other data interchange formats.
